What was your first impression of Girton?
Astonished! I had no idea what it looked like beforehand and I wanted to be surprised. I felt pure amazement when I saw it, it was really good.
Where’s your favourite place in college
My room, because I spend all my time in it! My lectures have been online for most of this year and a lot of my practicals have been online as well, so I’ve spent a significant amount of time working in my room. It’s a really nice room though. If it was smaller I couldn’t have done what I’ve done this year, I would have been so stressed out!
What’s your favourite schlub order?
I’m dairy free so it would have to be a BBQ chicken panini with spinach and tomatoes. That’s my go to when I’ve got no food in.
What is your best memory of Girton so far?
My best memory was last Christmas when all of my corridor got together and we did our own personalised corridor Christmas quiz. It was really fun and we all bought each other Secret Santa gifts as well.

Q: What’s your favourite thing about Girton?
‘Coming from a state school I was nervous about the elitist reputation of Cambridge, but being at Girton allowed me to meet people with a similar background to me, as well as interact with others who have had different life experiences which I feel has helped me grow as a person.’

Q: Weirdest/favourite memory so far?
A: ‘One of my best memories of Girton was accidentally sabotaging my friends college proposal by getting her soon-to-be college husband absolutely lashed’

Q: Green monster or Girton wine?
A: girton wine every time 🥂

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your next few years at Girton?
A: I’m currently in the middle of organising my year abroad in Germany and i am honestly so excited! Girton has already taught my so much about independence, but I feel that this next year will really see me put my skills into practice, and be one of the best chapters of my time as a student. Who knows, might not even come back for fourth year… ;)

Humans of Girton, Light Blues Captain Edition!!! Laura Bleehen, 6th Year Medic

Laura is this years’ Lights blues captain for Cambridge RUFC, + on Saturday she’ll lead the team as they face O*ford in the Varsity match at Twickenham. Laura also somehow balances that with being a 6th year medic. Her interview for Human’s of Girton helped glean some top tricks for being such an active member of the community…

HOW DID YOU GET INTO RUGBY? WAS IT A UNI THING OR BEFORE?
It was a uni thing! So, my first 3 years I played blues football as the goalkeeper, and then one of my friends on the team started playing rugby for a bit. They were like come along to some of the taster days in my third year and I really enjoyed it… I really enjoyed learning a new sport so I was like yea, I’m gonna change my allegiances and start playing rugby!

WHATS TRAINING BEEN LIKE, ESPECIALLY UP TO THIS GAME?
I mean, I’ve had a lot of experience balancing working and doing sports and I actually find that I can be more productive when I’m busy in some ways! When it comes to rugby we’ve gradually been getting better and better and I’m really excited to go out on that field with my teammates.

LEADING FROM THAT, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT SATURDAY?
Excited! I think that this is one of the best teams that I’ve been a part of in Cambridge and I know there’s so much quality on our team in every position and I’m just so excited to see that come to fruition in Twickenham… let’s hope we run a bit rampant!!!

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR JUGGLING YOUR DEGREE WITH EXTRACURRICULARS AND SOCIETIES SUCH AS RUGBY?
I would say find out really early on into the year every bit of information you possibly can about training schedules and supervisions, and then just schedule your life to the nth degree and you’ll be okay!!!

WHATS YOUR FAV SPOT IN GIRTON?
I really like Woodlands Court- I lived there for 3 years basically so it’s got a sweet spot for me.

DID YOU COME TO SPRING BALL? # #
I did, yeah! It was really good… one of the best balls I’ve been to in Cambridge and that’s 6 years of balls!!!

We wish Laura and the rest of the team the best of luck for Saturday and hope O*ford get pummelled x
