'As when the sun new-risen
Looks through the horizontal misty air
Shorn of his beams, or, from behind the moon
In dim eclipse, disastrous twilight sheds
On half the nations, and with fear of change
Perplexes monarchs ...'
(Paradise Lost 1.594-99)
This simile from alumnus John Milton's poem 'Paradise Lost', comparing the fallen Satan to an eclipsed sun, became one of the most controversial passages in the poem in the political climate of the Restoration, as the lines were understood to threaten kings with 'change', or revolution.

The oldest known example of printed wallpaper will go on display at Christ's for the first time in September as part of Open Cambridge.
The fragments were found and saved by workmen in the Master's Lodge in 1911 and carefully pieced together to reveal a pomegranate motif. The design was printed by York-based Hugo Goes on the back of other printed material, including a proclamation announcing the accession of King Henry VIII in 1509.
The wallpaper dates to around the time of the College's re-foundation in 1505 by Lady Margaret Beaufort.

Buzzing about bees! 🐝
Pupils from a local primary school have designed and painted boards for the front of the College beehives.
Patterned designs help foraging honeybees to identify their own hives and deter them from ‘stealing’ honey from neighbouring hives.
Beehive decoration is common practice in central and eastern Europe, and the College beekeepers took inspiration from this for the project here in Cambridge.
The students visited the College earlier this month to learn more about bees and beekeeping.
