A redesigned roof tile in Spain is quietly bringing little owls back to their homes. 🦉🏠

In Catalonia, conservationists noticed that little owls were disappearing from farmland. The reason was linked to building changes. Old barns were upgraded, roof holes were closed, and traditional tiles were replaced. These steps removed the natural nesting spots that owls depended on for survival.

Groups like Grup de Naturalistes d’Osona and Grup de Natura Sterna developed a practical solution. They created a clay tile with a hidden nesting space inside. Known as the “Teula Mussolera,” it looks like a normal tile but offers a safe place for owls to live and raise their young.

This approach shows that conservation can be simple and effective. It avoids complex systems and focuses on restoring lost habitats. The presence of owls also helps farmers by controlling pests naturally. It proves that small design changes can support both nature and human communities at the same time.
