A feature on the BBC One Show this week highlighted the importance of soft skills when young people leave education so they are fully prepared for the work place.

Whilst qualifications remain a valuable bench mark of intelligence and academic ability, the majority of business leaders are today placing equal importance on the ability for young people to have essential interpersonal skills that so many struggle with in today’s digital society.

There is currently a pioneering program with a cohort of 5000 young people in Manchester learning soft skills built on confidence such as answering the phone, speaking to customers, an audience and leading a team.

Although this initiative is honourable, surely it must be asked why these essential life skills are not fostered and acquired during the most formative years beyond just the acquisition of knowledge in school.

At mont21, we do this through hands-on learning where students solve real life problems collaboratively through an abundance of communication between peers, mentors and visiting experts, leadership skills and the presentation of an end product to an audience at the end of each term.

Education must be to get ready for life and not just for the passing of exams.

"School isn't the only way to get an education, and the school way isn't the only way to learn. In fact, some of the skills we need at school are quite different to the skills we need in order to direct our own learning.

This table from my new book 'A Different Way to Learn' contrasts some of the skills we need to do school 'well' with the skills we need to direct our own learning. Jumping in rather than waiting for instructions. Quitting rather than sticking with it when you've had enough. Diving down the rabbit holes rather than keeping on topic.

So many of us learnt how to do school without realising that in the process we were forgetting how to learn.
