Many boards treat AI regulations as a project, building compliance files for upcoming deadlines. But as Professor Matthew Grimes, Director of our AI Governance for Boards and CXOs programme, notes: āTwo boards can both pass every compliance test and not be equally well-governed,ā he observes. āOne has built a compliance file. The other has built a capability. They look the same on inspection day. They diverge the first time something the regulators did not anticipate, or the first time the regulators themselves change their minds."
AI is no longer just an IT tool; it is the foundation shaping hiring, customer interactions, and boardroom evidence. To govern it, directors should challenge their CEO with two diagnostic questions:
1) What are we currently treating as a technology question that is actually a governance question?
-2) Which of our decisions have we inadvertently begun to outsource to AI, and when did that happen?
True governance requires shifting from managing known risks to leading under conditions you cannot fully define in advance.

New blog post by the Academic Programme Director of our new AI Strategy for Enterprises programme
Many organisations find themselves stuck in a loop of isolated AI pilots. Individual experiments show promise, but results rarely scale, leaving leaders questioning how to translate use cases into a coherent, valueācreating strategy.
In this new blog, Professor Michael Barrett explores how to move from scattered initiatives to an organisationāwide approach to achieving enterprise value from AI. He outlines:
⢠Why AI is a strategic change initiative, not just a technology project
⢠The need to align AI with business strategy and clear priorities
⢠The role of data, governance and responsible AI in enabling scale and managing risk
⢠How to move from fragmented pilots to coordinated initiatives.
As Professor Barrett explains, āPilots are the starting point, not the destination.ā
These themes underpin our AI Strategy for Enterprises programme, designed to help senior leaders move from experimentation to a coordinated, valueādriven approach and leave with a clear roadmap for implementation.

Inspiring Leader Insights: Ted Takahashi
Weāre delighted to share reflections from Ted Takahashi, a past participant of the Cambridge Advanced Leadership Programme (ALP).
Ted shares how increasing leadership complexity, across geographies, cultures, and stakeholders, prompted a shift beyond traditional problem-solving. Through the ALP, he reframed leadership as creating the conditions for others to think, adapt, and perform.
Key takeaways from his experience:
- Moving from āproblem-solverā to enabler of team performance
- Challenging assumptions and embracing diverse perspectives
- Leading with empowerment, especially in times of uncertainty.
As Ted reflects, ALP was not just lifeāchanging, but lifeāamplifying.

The AI landscape isnāt just evolving, it is rewriting the rules of enterprise transformation.
Join us this summer (22ā24 July 2026) in Cambridge for the inaugural AI Strategy for Enterprises programme. This is a fantastic opportunity for leaders seeking to understand how to incorporate AI, data, and AI agents into enterprise strategy and operating models, and successfully navigate the organisational consequences of doing so.
Participants will move beyond experimentation to develop a rigorous, strategic response to the opportunities and challenges created by AI. Over three days, we will examine how AI and digital futures are reshaping competitive positioning, value creation, and strategic choiceāall while considering the realities of your own organisationās data, capabilities, and ambitions.
The focus is not on adopting technology for its own sake, but on building the insight needed to make informed, practical, and responsible strategic decisions.
Learn from our world-class faculty who bring fresh insights from their leading-edge research into all of our Executive Education programmes. The Academic Programme Director (APD) for this programme is Professor Michael Barrett.
