Sarah Justine Packwood 1970 - 2024 23/11/2024

Sarah Packwood's loss to the world of disaster relief management and practical ecological awareness raising with practical pathways laid out for change for a more equitable and eco-sensitive world is a personal one for us here at CCARHT. Our founder owed a great deal to Sarah for her support in the first years of our inception as a research body responding to the systemic challenges which we sought to develop. Her memorial will be on Advent Sunday which is a fitting time to say our UK goodbye's. We shall also consider with others involved in a range of social justice movements who will be gathering what potential next steps might be to carry forward her particular commitment to the implementation of the Sustainable development Goals across our areas of policy and praxis.

8th Annual CCARHT Symposium 2024 - Land, Widows and Wombs 09/09/2024

🇺🇬 Speaker Spotlight: Harriet Ssali to Speak at CCARHT's 8th Annual Symposium

We're honoured to welcome Harriet Ssali Abrahams (LLB, MBA, ACIM, CIPR) as a speaker to the CCARHT Symposium on
"Land, Widows and Wombs: A Gendered Assets Approach to 'Enabling Environments' of
Human Trafficking and Exploitation."

Symposium details:
🗓️11th-12th September
📍Newnham College, Cambridge (In-person and online tickets available)

Harriet Ssali, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Uganda, brings 23 years of experience in
International Criminal Law. Her new blog on ccarht.org looks at genocidal and wartime r**e
in Northern Uganda, providing vital insights into the symposium's themes:
• Examines the Lord's Resistance Army's (LRA) armed conflict in Northern Uganda (1980s-
2006)
• Highlights ICC charges against LRA leader Joseph Kony for atrocities including sexual
abuse
• Discusses the limited prosecution: only 2 LRA members brought to justice so far
• Explores the lasting impact on survivors and their children, known as 'children with no
name'

Read Harriet’s blog post here: https://www.ccarht.org/2024/09/09/genocidal-and-wartime-r**e-in-northern-uganda/

Harriet highlights the importance of the upcoming symposium and the issues to be
discussed:
"I’m excited at the opportunity of taking part in the symposium because of my
passion for women justice in conflict areas. I have worked and lived in countries torn
by war where women were subjected to countless crimes on a daily basis. Imagine a
place like an internally displaced people’s camp where there is no police to protect
you from lawbreakers. No door on your tent to shut out rapists. No way of keeping
your personal belongings safe or protecting your children from human traffickers.
There has to be an end to impunity and the upholding of the Rule of Law”

Harriet's expertise includes:
• Former UN Judicial Affairs Advisor in Somalia
• Experience with ICTY, ICC, and Uganda's International Crimes Division
• PhD candidate in International Criminal Law at Western University, Canada

Join Harriet and the rest of our brilliant speakers at Newnham College, Cambridge, or online for this important dialogue this week.

📢 New Blog Post: The Hidden Cost of Remittances: African Women Domestic Workers in the Gulf

In the lead-up to our 8th Annual Symposium next week, CCARHT examines the work of Global Justice Group on African women domestic workers in Gulf countries.

Our latest blog post explores some thought-provoking claims:
⚫ Approximately 2.7 million African women are employed in households across the Gulf region, some of whom may be at risk of exploitation.
⚫ Nearly 99% of Kenyan women migrating to the Gulf faced recruitment-related abuses before departure.
⚫ Between 2020 and April 2024, at least 371 Kenyans, mostly domestic workers, reportedly lost their lives in Saudi Arabia.

🔗 These claims raise important questions about the intersections of gender, migration, and exploitation. We invite you to read the full post and we'd love to hear your thoughts: https://www.ccarht.org/2024/09/04/the-hidden-cost-of-remittances-african-women-domestic-workers-in-the-gulf/

All of this and more will be under discussion on Day 2, Chapter 3: Wombs. Valentina Cominetti, Executive Director of Global Justice Group, will share insights from her work with victims of international crimes. Her presentation, "Exploited Wombs: The Dual Burden of Caregiving and Sexual Abuse Among Migrant Domestic Workers in the Gulf", is part of a panel including voices from Morocco, Iraq, Syria, and Jordan. Together, they'll explore the realities underpinning this issue.
