Many young people have little awareness of the jobs available in outdoor education because it is not an industry they regularly encounter.

Matthew Lea from Fenland Adventure helps change that by introducing students to a career built around outdoor learning and activities including climbing, archery and target sports.

In this Ambassador Spotlight, Matthew explains why he enjoys showing young people that working outdoors is a genuine career option they can explore.

It only takes one new conversation to reveal a pathway a young person may never have considered.

Before speaking to Joe Mitton, none of the students in the room had considered a career in fitness. After hearing his story, around half thought it was a pathway they might explore.

As the owner and founder of MitFit, Joe brought the industry to life by speaking honestly about his career, his business and the challenges he has faced along the way.

The students may not all pursue careers in fitness, but they left knowing it was an option. That is the difference one conversation with someone from the workplace can make.

In this Ambassador Spotlight, Joe also shares the advice he wishes he had received when he was younger and explains why volunteering can make a genuine difference to both young people and the Ambassadors supporting them.

“You make a real difference, and it can make a real difference for you.”

Thank you, Joe, for helping young people see new possibilities for their futures.

Few people have contributed more to Form the Future’s Ambassador community than Stephen Blackmore.

Stephen has supported Form the Future since its earliest days, giving his time to help young people recognise their potential and find their place in the world of work.

His contribution includes completing an 18-month mentoring programme at Impington Village College, supporting seven students facing challenges as they worked towards their goals. One of those young people later contacted Stephen for job advice and a reference, demonstrating the lasting value of his time.

Stephen’s dedication was recognised with a special Long-standing Contribution Award at Form the Future’s 10 Year Anniversary Party.

Stephen said:
“When I started going into schools, I very quickly realised that actually the bright kids, the kids that will do okay, will be alright. But it’s the kids who have had the disadvantaged upbringings, who have really struggled in life. But what they needed was someone to listen to them. They needed someone to give them guidance. And to make them realise that they had a place in society. And that’s been my aim over the 10 years. I’ve had some amazing rewards from that, and I’ve had a great career in my life, but doing the work for you guys has been by far the most rewarding.”

Thank you, Stephen, for your extraordinary commitment and for showing what can happen when a young person has someone willing to listen, guide and believe in them.

A job interview is a two-way process.

Employers are assessing a candidate, but that candidate is also deciding whether the role, organisation and working environment are right for them.

Drawing on her experience as a chartered accountant, business leader and coach, Tina McEwan helps young people recognise their strengths, understand what they want from an employer and seek opportunities in which they can thrive.

Through activities including What’s My Line?, Careers Carousels and Mock Interviews, Tina has also gained valuable insight into young people’s ambitions, priorities and perspectives. That understanding has helped her develop professionally and become a better coach.

In this Ambassador Spotlight, Tina explains how volunteering creates opportunities to give back, learn from young people and meet like-minded people from across the Cambridge business community.

“I know my younger self would have appreciated volunteers like the ones from Form the Future.”

Amara McCalla returned to her former school as a Form the Future Ambassador, giving students the kind of careers support she felt had been missing from her own experience.

As a Trainee Development Surveyor at Hill Group, Amara was able to share her perspective with young people while building her own communication, leadership and feedback skills.

Her story demonstrates that you do not need to be decades into your career to have something valuable to offer. Your experiences could be exactly what a young person needs to hear.

"I don't think I'd be where I am today without all those experiences and support."

When Krisha, first got involved with Form the Future, she was searching for work experience.

Some students begin a Mock Interview feeling nervous, avoiding eye contact and unsure of what to say. Seeing them leave more confident, engaged and proud of themselves is what keeps Mike Mair coming back.

A leadership and people development specialist and parent, Mike volunteers because he believes young people deserve opportunities to learn about the workplace from people with first-hand experience, not only from textbooks.

The experience benefits Mike too. Speaking with students helps him better understand the expectations and perspectives of a younger generation entering an increasingly multigenerational workplace. He can then use those insights to help leaders and organisations support young people as they begin their careers.

In this Ambassador Spotlight, Mike explains why volunteering is an opportunity to inspire young people, learn from them and connect with professionals from other industries.

“You don’t need to know everything about the career a student is interested in. It’s about asking questions, sharing your experiences and inspiring them.”

Drawing on his experience as a trainer, coach and facilitator at Amazon Web Services, Michał Niezgoda has supported young people through Form the Future’s mentoring programme.

One student Michał worked with had a clear career ambition but felt unsure about how to reach it. Through mentoring conversations, they identified practical steps the student could take, including approaching relevant local organisations about volunteering.

Michał later learnt that the student had successfully secured a volunteering opportunity connected to their chosen career. It is a brilliant example of how asking the right questions can help a young person turn an ambition into action.

In this Ambassador Spotlight, Michał explains why you do not need to have all the answers to become a mentor. You simply need to be willing to listen, share your experience and learn from the young people you support.

Apprenticeships do more than help people enter an industry. They can also enable employees to develop new skills, take on greater responsibility and progress within their chosen career.

Claudia Susanu, Talent, Culture and ESG Manager at ibis Cambridge Central Station, has seen that impact first-hand.

One colleague, Leo, developed his leadership and problem-solving skills through a Hospitality Team Leader apprenticeship while progressing into a team leader role. He went on to join Claudia in speaking with students about apprenticeships and sharing his own career journey.

In this Ambassador Spotlight, Claudia explains how she helps young people understand the opportunities available within hospitality and shows them how an apprenticeship can help them create their own path.

Thank you, Claudia, for inspiring the next generation of hospitality talent.

Over the past two weeks, a group of students from across Cambridge had the opportunity to step inside Bango and experience what working at a leading technology company is really like.

From Marketing and Product to Technology and Finance, each student joined a team aligned with their interests, contributing to real projects, learning from experienced professionals and building the confidence that comes from meaningful workplace experience.

The internships concluded with presentations reflecting on everything they had learnt, from the new skills they had developed to discovering career paths they may never have previously considered.

A huge thank you to everyone at Bango for creating such a supportive environment. By opening their doors and investing their time, they've helped these young people take an important step towards their future.

If you're a parent or carer of a young person who would benefit from opportunities like this, follow our page to keep up to date with work experience placements, careers events and programmes designed to help young people explore their future.
