Join us on 12th April at 19:30 GMT to learn about "Pattern formation live from the kitchen!"
Patterns, patterns, patterns everywhere! The science of pattern formation lies at the very core of the evolution and development of living systems.
In this session we will take a brief tour of some interesting universal principles that lead to coherent patterns in space and time and explore some examples of how of geometry and symmetry trigger the emergence of some of nature's most striking patterns, including Turing patterns, circadian rhythms, neuron and cardiac dynamics, and patterned animal coats.
To illustrate some principles of pattern formation we will carry out a live convection experiment streamed from the kitchen of a Cambridge scientist!
Speaker: Dr Carlos A Lugo-Velez, University of Cambridge

Join us on 22nd March at 19:30 GMT to learn about "Bringing biological and medical innovations to market"
The events explore what the future challenges are in the (red, green, white and blue) biotech and medtech sectors and how you take ideas/research to market in these sectors?
Hear from founders where they got the idea, what and who’s problem they want to solve, what motivated them to start a company and how they are navigating the process from concept to product? Be ready to be inspired!
Speaker: Dr Alexander Edwards is Associate Professor in Biomedical Technology at the University of Reading and co-founder of Capillary Film Technology Ltd, a healthtech startup company that aims to commercialise Micro Capillary Film immunoassay technology for diagnostic applications.

Join us on 22nd Feb to find, learn and discuss about Low-cost spectrophotometers and how you can use them in your biology projects?
Club link: https://buff.ly/3afg0te
During this event, we will discuss these off-the-shelf options as well as some cool maker-friendly DIY builds. In particular, we will show how a simple spectrophotometer can be realised by hacking a fitness tracker.
Don't worry if you didn't come across spectrophotometers so far. We will show you how you might be using them already in your daily life.
Hosted by Dr. Ganga Chinna Rao Devarapu.

There has been an absolutely thrilling development in the field of protein structural biology today. AlphaFold, a project run by DeepMind, has produced a model that significantly outperforms all other teams in determining a protein’s 3D shape from its amino-acid sequence. Read more about it at their own blog, and most likely in all major news outlets by the end of the day.
AlphaFold: a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology
In a major scientific advance, the latest version of our AI system AlphaFold has been recognised as a solution to this grand challenge by the organisers of the biennial Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP) assessment. This breakthrough demonstrates the impact AI can have on sci...
