Instead of following hard-and-fast rules about what layers to wear for different temperatures, it’s best to just assess your baby before each and every sleep. Check their chest or the back of the neck – if they are hot or clammy here, take one or two layers off.

Blanket or sleeping bag? This is something we get asked a lot but the truth is, both are fine as long as they’re used safely. So, let’s cover some of the basics...
-
BLANKETS: Blankets are often the cheaper option. They should be thin and lightweight so that you can easily adjust the amount of bedding to the temperature. To use a blanket safely, pop your little one at the bottom of the cot (the feet-to-foot position) and tuck the blanket in firmly (not above shoulder height). This is to prevent baby wriggling underneath the blanket, which may cause overheating.
-
SLEEPING BAGS: Baby sleeping bags are wearable blankets with arm holes to prevent baby wriggling down under the bedding. Most sleeping bags are fitted according to a baby’s weight, rather than age, so check the manufacturer’s guidelines. Sleeping bags come in different thicknesses and this is indicated by the ‘tog rating’ - the lower the tog rating, the thinner the bag.

If your little one falls asleep in their car seat, gently lift them out when you get to your destination and place them on a firm, flat surface such as a cot or Moses basket. In terms of reducing SIDS, it is far safer for your baby to be laid flat (and if you’re lucky, they might not even notice you’ve moved them!).

We are recruiting! Not one, but TWO brand new roles at ERIC, The Children's Bowel & Bladder Charity. It’s a great time to join us as this autumn we will start making big plans for the next 3-5 years. We are looking for a children’s specialist bladder & bowel nurse
and a digital communications and content assistant.
These two roles are very different but equally important to us in our quest to enable all children and young people to live a happy and healthy life regardless of any bladder or bowel condition. Get more details on the roles and how to apply by following link in comments below.
