🫧🌈 Splat, Squish & Explore! 🌈🫧

Our babies had lots of fun exploring shaving foam through cling film today! 👶✨

The shaving foam was safely sealed to the table using cling film, allowing the babies to squish, press, pat and move the foam around using their hands and fingers.

As we explored, we talked about how soft and squishy the foam felt and watched carefully as the different colours began to mix together when we moved them around the table. 🎨

We also introduced fun words such as “splat!” as the babies placed their hands down onto the table, supporting their early communication and language development through play. 🗣️💕

A lovely sensory experience supporting curiosity, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and early language — all while getting wonderfully messy without the mess! 🥰🫧

🌿🪣 Messy Play, Meaningful Learning – The Magic of Our Mud Kitchen! 🪣🌿

There’s something very special about a mud kitchen! To us, it might look like mud, water, pots and pans… but to a child, it can become a café, a bakery, a potion laboratory, a restaurant or anything else their imagination creates! 🥣🍃✨

Mud play offers so many wonderful opportunities for children’s learning and development:

🌱 Imagination & creativity – Children can create mud pies, soups, potions and recipes, using natural materials to bring their ideas to life.

🥄 Fine & gross motor skills – Scooping, pouring, stirring, digging, transporting and mixing all help develop coordination, strength and control.

💬 Communication & language – Playing alongside friends encourages children to talk about what they are making, share ideas, introduce new vocabulary and develop their conversational skills.

🤝 Social development – A mud kitchen provides fantastic opportunities for children to play collaboratively, take turns, share resources, negotiate roles and develop friendships.

🔢 Early maths – Without even realising it, children explore concepts such as full and empty, more and less, heavy and light, quantities, counting and measuring as they fill containers and create their muddy masterpieces.

🔍 Understanding the world – Children can investigate how mud changes when water is added, explore different textures and discover natural materials such as leaves, sticks, stones and flowers.

💚 Sensory exploration – Mud play gives children the freedom to experience different textures, smells and consistencies, encouraging curiosity and confidence when exploring the world around them.

Most importantly, mud play gives children the opportunity to experiment, make their own choices, get messy and have FUN! 🌿🤎

So when you see muddy hands, clothes and wellies at the end of the day, remember… there has probably been a whole lot of learning happening too! 🥰🌟

✨🌈 Exploring Our New Sensory Shed! 🌈✨

We are so excited to see the children across all of our rooms enjoying and exploring our brand-new sensory shed! 🥰

Our sensory shed has been thoughtfully created to provide a calm, inviting and stimulating space where children of all ages can explore using their senses, follow their interests and learn through play. 💫

🐠 The fish bubble lamp has been a firm favourite, with the children watching the bubbles rise and the fish gently move around. This provides a wonderful visual experience and can support concentration, relaxation and visual tracking.

🪩 Our reflective balls encourage the children to investigate reflections, light and movement. The children can spot themselves and their friends, supporting self-awareness, curiosity and exploration.

🧩 The children also have access to a range of loose parts, giving them the freedom to create, arrange, build, transport and explore in their own individual ways. The beauty of loose-parts play is that there is no set outcome — the children’s imaginations can lead the learning! 💭

🖍️ With multiple mark-making stations available, children can independently explore making lines, shapes and patterns using a variety of resources. These experiences help strengthen the muscles needed for fine motor control and early writing, while giving children another way to express their ideas and creativity. ✍️🎨

One of the things we love most about our sensory shed is that every child can experience it differently. For some, it is a calm space to sit, watch and explore; for others, it becomes a place filled with investigation, creativity and discovery. ❤️

We can’t wait to see where the children’s curiosity takes them as they continue to explore this wonderful new addition to our nursery! 🌟

Sometimes the simplest resources create the best learning opportunities! 🥰

Our babies have been busy exploring curtain rings and a mug tree as part of their loose-parts play. The children carefully picked up the rings, explored them with their hands and worked out how to place and hang them onto the different branches of the mug tree. 👏

It might look like a simple activity, but there is so much learning happening! 🌟 As the babies grasp, hold, lift and position the rings, they are developing their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and control. It also encourages concentration, perseverance and problem-solving as they work out how to get the rings onto the tree.

Loose-parts play is wonderful for babies because there is no right or wrong way to explore. It gives them the freedom to investigate, experiment and discover what different objects can do. 💭✨

The children were able to explore cause and effect, noticing what happened when they placed, dropped, removed and moved the rings, while adults supported their communication by using words such as “on”, “off”, “up”, “down”, “more” and “again”. 🗣️

A fantastic example of how everyday objects can provide endless opportunities for curiosity, exploration and learning! 💛
