An Opening Celebration of the Arbury Social!

A wonderful event yesterday and a fantastic opportunity for us to celebrate the hard work and amazing results that the New Meaning Foundation construction team produced on this project. We are very proud of what they have achieved, as should they.

It was also fantastic to be able to bring along some of our current learners, to represent New Meaning Foundation!

Thank you again to Cambridge City Council and Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC for trusting our young people to deliver on this project, and for allowing them an opportunity for development and growth in their careers.

“New Meaning Foundation is a charity that supports young people who are not academically minded or didn’t fit into mainstream school. We have a social enterprise construction charity business and build modular homes for ex-homeless people (there are 10 in Cambridge, 6 in Wisbech and 2 in Ipswich currently). We also renovate and refurbish private homes and build garden studios as offices, gyms and home extensions. Currently we are renovating an old church hall in Ipswich and will install 3 studio flats for ex-homeless residents.

All these activities are to enable us to help young people move on to paid “patient employment” with us as they learn the various skills and work habits required to progress in life and work. Since 2019, 85 have gone into employment. Most of these came to us with no qualifications and usually no clear ambition or sense of hope. We also deliver functional skills and pathways into adulthood training for around 25 otherwise NEET or disengaged young people every year, often with specialist or additional needs.

The Meadows café project is our first commercial standard project and we are very grateful to the Council for giving us the job. In particular Alison Conder, Vicky Hayward, Sam Scharf and Peter Horton. All helped us deliver with various new technical challenges along the way. Our team was led on site by Bradley Davison with Leo Cole, Tom Duffy, Wally Smith, Theo Lawrence, Dave Lawrence and Kevin Galary who all learned new skills and our technical adviser JinSeok was also invaluable in offering advice and guidance. We hope this project will open the door to more work with and for the City Council. Thanks also to Sam and Bea of Cambridge Sustainable Food for their patience in waiting for the official handover.”

Learners at our provision "achieve" in different ways.

We value academic success, with our learners achieving a % pass rate for pass rate in functional skills and % in construction skills.

However, the achievements do not stop there. We also place a strong focus on:

NMF uses innovative and hands-on learning for functional skills, and vocational construction training to engage young people in education. We identify a young person's needs and we meet them where they are at, in order to achieve their educational goals.

How do you solve a local housing crisis and the youth disengagement crisis with the exact same budget?

We have officially broken ground on our latest project in Ipswich, delivering a new site of our custom-designed SPACE Micro-homes. These high-spec, modular houses are designed to provide a safe space, the dignity of a front door, and a permanent address for people transitioning out of homelessness.

But the social value of this project starts long before the keys are handed over.

Every single commercial contract we take on is built by a team that includes our own graduates/learners. These are vulnerable young people with EHCPs and additional needs, who did not thrive in traditional, desk-based classrooms. Disengaged from mainstream education, many were written off by a system that offered them zero pathways to a meaningful career. On our sites, they aren't labelled by their challenges; they are paid employees mastering complex construction, handling high-end modular designs, and building their own independence.

It is incredibly hard to get a teenager off their phone during the summer holidays.

The battle against, scrolling, screen-time, and mindless technology is constant for parents, It is even harder to find safe, productive, and affordable activities that kids actually want to attend.

Our summer clubs brough young people to swap their screens for saws, drills, and timber.

When we looked at the feedback from our summer construction club, one result stood out above everything else: 100% of the young people said they are now inspired to learn MORE construction skills.

They didn't just show up to pass the time, they got stuck in. Every single one, learned to safely handle tools, to built confidence they didn't know they had, and walked away not only having built a shepherd's hut, but also taking home a wooden bench they built with their own hands!

100% of parents said they would recommend us. Why? Because we didn't just keep their kids safe and out of trouble for a few weeks; we showed them what they are capable of achieving when they put the phones down.

What is the Arbury Social?
The Arbury Social is the new cafe, opening in the Meadows Community Centre in Arbury, run by Cambridge Sustainable Food As more than just a cafe, the Arbury social is a community space, focused on health and affordable meals, community growth, and sustainability.

Why is New Meaning Foundation involved?
New Meaning Foundation is the organisation that carried out the construction work on the project. To bring the Arbury Social to the community centre, a kitchen extension was required. New Meaning Foundation undertook the full extension process from erecting walls, to ensuring fire safety, to installing kitchen equipment.

Why does this matter?
By contracting New Meaning Foundation for this construction project, Cambridge City Council and Cambridge Sustainable Food are following cafe's values of community wealth. As a youth charity, New Meaning Foundation focuses on supporting disadvantaged young people, through education and into sustainable careers.

The impact of undertaking this project, for New Meaning Foundation is huge. The construction team is made up on young people who are learning and developing work skills through New Meaning Foundation's patient employment scheme. The Arbury Social was a challenging project that pushed the team beyond their comfort zone in order to learn may new construction skills, and techniques.

This project demonstrated massive community value in providing employment and development opportunities for vulnerable youth; all before it even opened it's doors!

First week back at school!

The first days back at school can be scary or difficult for some. So whether you are someone who loves the first day back or someone who dreads it, well done on making it through the first week.

We are also very excited to welcome back our returning learners and to say hello to many new faces. We are excited to watch you all grow, and to see the fantastic things that you will create.
