🔷️Are you spoiling your baby?
We’ll answer this one for you... NO – you can not spoil a baby!

🔶️ "You’re spoiling your baby by cuddling them too much and picking them up every time they cry.”
Did you know that it’s actually impossible to spoil a baby and that cuddling your baby is beneficial for both them and you? Oxytocin - the feel-good hormone - increases in both mothers and babies during a cuddle.

🔷️ Babies are not trying to manipulate you with their cries. They cry when something is wrong, and they need you. Responding to your baby’s cries helps develop trust, teaching your baby that you will be there to help when they need something.

🔶️A parent who ignores a baby’s need for comfort can lead to an insecure attachment.
Securely attached children seek their parents when distressed and know they will be comforted.

🔷️ Psychologists Dr Karen Appleyard, Ph.D. & Dr Lisa J. Berlin, Ph.D explain why a secure attachment is important:
“A secure attachment is characterized by the child’s ability to use his or her parent as a source of comfort and a “secure base” from which to explore. A key principle of attachment theory is that dependence leads to independence.
In other words, it is only when a child feels confident in his parent’s availability that he can fully explore and play on his own.
Early attachments lay the foundation for social and academic skills. A number of studies that have followed children from infancy to adolescence or adulthood have illustrated that attachment quality is one of the strongest predictors of later development.”

🥰 So cuddle your baby, feed your baby, and carry your baby! Your instincts are there for a reason - trust them!

🔷️ Glandular fever (also known as infectious mononucleosis) is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In babies and toddlers, symptoms are often mild, but it’s still important to know what to look for.

🔸️Common symptoms in children can include:
• High fever
• Sore throat / tonsillitis
• Swollen glands (especially in the neck)
• Extreme tiredness or fatigue
• Rash
• Poor appetite or swollen tonsils

🔸️How common is it?
In the UK, many children are exposed to EBV very early in life. Research shows:
• Around 20–50% of children test positive for the virus - usually with no symptoms - by age 2
• By ages 1–5 years, about 70% have already had EBV
• By adulthood, nearly everyone has been infected

🔹️Older children and young adults who contract the virus for the first time are more likely to display symptoms.
🔸️Most children recover within a few weeks, though fatigue can sometimes linger.

🔶️Always speak to your GP if your child has ongoing high fever, severe sore throat, or prolonged exhaustion.

🔷️ Sleep deprivation is no joke. There’s a reason it’s used as a form of torture.

🔹️ If you’re struggling. You’re not alone. Sleep deprivation with a new baby is real (and brutal) - but there are ways to cope

- Nap/rest when you can (the washing can wait).
- Share night shifts with a partner.
- Sacrifice evening Netflix time once in a while to catch up on sleep.
- Safe co-sleeping can help you rest more.
- Fuel your body - hydrate & eat balanced meals (not just coffee + biscuits!).
- Fresh air & gentle movement gives an instant energy boost.
- Mindfulness, breathing, or even 5 mins of calm can reset your nervous system.

❤️ Be kind to yourself - this phase will pass.

🔶️ Extra tips:
- Put your phone down before bed (blue light messes with sleep).
- Create a calming bedtime ritual for you, not just baby.
- Keep a notebook by the bed - jotting worries down can stop that 3am spiral.

🔹️You’ve got this. One day at a time.

🥰 It will get better. You will sleep again. We promise.

🔷️ Babies can drown in as little as 5cm (2 inches) of water.

🔸️The bath is one of the most common places for babies and young children to drown.

🔷️ Never leave a baby or young child alone in the bath — not even for a moment.

- Don't rely on an older sibling to supervise them.
- Don't rely on a bath seat — it is not a safety device.
- Have everything you need ready before bath time so you don't need to leave them.

🔶️ Around swimming pools and other water:
- Stay with your child and supervise them closely
- Use safe, supervised swimming areas
- Teach children about water safety and swimming as they get older
- Empty paddling pools immediately after use
- Secure ponds and other water hazards in the garden

🔹️ A good rule of thumb is always to have babies and children within an arms reach around water.

🔷️ Would you know what to do if a child was pulled from the water?

🔷️ You’ll want to save this one!

🔸️Germ season is fast approaching! The winter months are notorious for the spreading of bugs and illnesses, particularly in children in childcare settings and schools.

🔹️Here’s a useful graphic showing when you can send your little one into school or nursery (if they are well enough in themselves to go) and when you need to keep them home.

🔸️Getting lots of bugs isn’t necessarily a bad thing for young children. In many (not all) illnesses, exposure is necessary in order for the immune system to be able to protect them. That said, it can be miserable when you have a constant stream of coughs and colds brought into your home, making everyone poorly.

✔️ SAVE this post so you can refer to it later and TAG your parent friends who might also find this useful.

🔶️ And stay tuned as we’ll be posted about each of these illnesses, including the symptoms to look out for, when it can be treated at home and when you need to see a GP.

🔹️Make sure you’re following us and add us to your favourites so you don’t miss a post!

🔷️ Sepsis can be life-threatening — and it’s more common than you might think.

🔸️ In the UK, around 245,000 people are affected by sepsis every year, and sadly 48,000 people lose their lives because of it.

🔹️ Sepsis is a reaction to an infection where the body’s immune system starts attacking its own tissues and organs. It can develop quickly and is hard to spot — especially in babies and young children.

🔸️ That’s why knowing the symptoms matters. Acting fast could save a life.

✔️Save this post so you can refer back to it in an emergency, and please share to raise awareness. Together, we can spread the word and help protect more families.
