That’s a wrap on Charles Shearer’s summer school! What a great group with some brilliant work made over 3 days, working with drawing into print, exploring monoprint and cardboard cut with some intaglio techniques.

13 August 10am - 4pm

Cyanotype is an early photographic process which produces a cyan-coloured print. It was used by Anna Atkins to illustrate the first book with photographic images. The process was adopted by engineers and architects as a way of producing copies of drawings- hence the term ‘blueprint’. On this course, you will explore the possibilities for creating both Cyanotypes from drawn and photographic images and Photograms from found objects.

OPEN ACCESS PRINTING 🧑🏻‍🎨 available Mon- Fri with some Saturdays.

Members and non- members are welcome to book open access sessions for printing in our studios. Come for the morning, afternoon, or a full day. If you’ve already completed a course with us in a relevant technique, you don’t need an induction to use that particular press.

Our open access studio offers a relaxed environment with technical support where needed. We have a maximum of 4 people printing in the space on a range of presses at one time and we make sure you have the space you need to work. With air conditioning, and a lovely space to eat lunch outside, you can continue your work even in a heatwave.

We have 2 etching presses, a large and small Albion as well as an offset litho press in the open access studio. We welcome stone lithography open access in studio 2, juts contact us to arrange a good time.

We can also arrange assisted open access days with 1-1 technician support in a particular medium to help develop your skills and confidence.

Customise your clothes with Lino!

On 7th August, we are running a course on how to print your linocut designs onto t-shirts or any other items of clothing you’d like to customise.

Using softcut lino, cut creative shapes and motifs to print onto items of your clothing. Images can be repeated, to cover large areas or placed creatively to add interest to print onto items of your clothing. Use presses and hand print – depending on the item to be printed onto.

Course structure
• Introduction to technique and view examples
• Use your images to design your lino cuts
• Cut two lino shaped tiles
• Ink up and print using a press or by hand

Pre course information
Bring your items of clean, ironed clothing to print onto and images for your linocut.

Experience level
Suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills.

Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in drawing, printing, inking and learning from a true master craftsman. Charles Shearer is an illustrator and artist who has honed his practice over years of experimentation, creating his unique style. He has illustrated numerous books and publications, but printmaking and drawing remain at the heart of his practice. Charles is an experienced tutor who generously shares his secrets and techniques.

Bring your sketchbook, you will go out and draw in the beautiful surroundings, then translate your drawings into prints.

Ross Loveday has been in the studio editioning with studio member and certificate alumnus Rob Mills. They’ve been working on some fantastic carborundum prints, experimenting with inking and ghost prints.

Lovely to see such concentrated energy and serious printing going on in our open access studio.

FAMILY PRINT DAY!

Why not sign up for a day of creativity with the family, in our cool, air conditioned studios? Family Print Day is the perfect way to spend time together, learning something new and making special memories. Learning drypoint etching and reduction printing, you’ll print go home with a handful of handmade artworks to cherish and enjoy for years to come.
You might even inspire the next generation of artists!

You’ll be guided through the printing processes by our tutors and you’ll work side by side on your creations. It’s not everyday you get to use beautiful 200 year old machinery to make something.

We were delighted to welcome our friends Kate Rawlings Home and Tyler Butt - Nutrition & Home Cooking for their own family printing session and look forward to seeing them again in the studios here at Curwen.

There are only 2 spaces left on this immersive, 3 Day Etching Summer School with Jason Hicklin from 21-23 August.

Learn to etch on zinc with expressive tonal techniques including aquatint and sugarlift. Jason Hicklin is a true master of his art, spending many years working alongside Norman Ackroyd RA editioning his work and working in his studio after studying at St Martin’s College of Art. He is a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and is currently Head of Printmaking, running the etching room at City and Guilds Art School in London. He exhibits his work internationally and his stunning, enigmatic works can be bought from Eames Fine Art in Bermondsey, London.

Introduction to solar plate with Susie Turner

30 & 31 July 10am - 4pm

Explore making art with light ☀️ 💡

Solar plate printmaking uses a metal plate coated in a light-sensitive polymer to create either a relief printing plate or an intaglio printing plate. On this two-day course you will learn how to use a UV exposure unit and natural sunlight to create both types of plate, and how to develop them in water. Using hand-drawn and photographic artwork as well as found objects and natural materials, you will be able to explore the delicate sensitivity and potential of this non-toxic technique to capture intricate details. You will be able to experiment with blind embossing, masking, and combining plates. By the end of the course, you will have created a variety of prints to take home.
