Last week I began coaching someone who doesn’t want the mental load of a new role right now, but also knows she’ll regret it if she stays.
In coaching psychology there’s a useful lens for this: multiplicity i.e. the idea that we’re not one fixed self but a team of selves that take the wheel in different contexts (research reference below).
What “multiplicity” means (plain English):
Different parts of you prioritise different values - rest, security, growth, impact. In certain contexts one part might be more dominant (e.g., “Protector” at home; “Striver” at work). Coaching can help them collaborate rather than compete.
If you’re torn right now, try any of these five micro-practices:
1) Name the pulls. “Part of me wants # # ; part of me wants yyyyyy”
2) Ask each what it protects, what its role is. “What are you trying to look after for me?”
3) Set a ‘for-now’ horizon. Decide who drives for the next two weeks, not forever.
4) Design a small experiment. One move that honours both parts (e.g., meet a recruiter AND ring-fence 'me time').
5) Do a quick review at the end of the week: What improved? What needs renegotiating?

With your permission at the end I will tell you a bit about my accredited NLP training which will be run later in the year, but my focus and emphasis in this hour will be talking with you about NLP and giving you the opportunity to learn about NLP free of charge.
I am an Accredited Master Trainer in NLP, and LOVE sharing my knowledge and experience. As a Chartered Psychologist, I have written 2 books on NLP, 9 chapters on NLP, and countless academic papers on NLP...but my passion is in the DOING. Recently I used NLP modelling to get a bronze medal at the European Duathlon Championships and currently I am using NLP modelling to write my 3rd book on NLP.
