We are delighted to round off Women's History Month by celebrating the brilliant Cairo from our Gardens team, who is responsible for making our College look so incredibly beautiful!

Here is what she has to say:

“Hi I’m Cairo! I have the pleasure to look after the College gardens along with the rest of the team, under the care and direction of our Head Gardener.

I love the gardens and outdoor spaces at Magdalene. There is always something of interest - from the delightful winter fragrances of winter flowering honeysuckle, sarcococcas and daphnes, to the spectacular spring bulb displays of snowdrops, eranthis, anemones, iris reticulata, fritillaries, narcissi and tulips gracing the riverside path and other corners here and there, through the early to late summer displays of Second Court, and the ever-giving salvias and stunning blossom and autumn foliage of the cherry trees dotted about, to the classic dahlia bed at the front of College that lasts right through until almost December - all against a backdrop of beautiful climbing wisterias and roses, with the added interest of a few wall-trained fruit trees, and our iconic hatched ivies on River Court!

'We are fortunate also to retain many relatively natural areas, and lucky enough to have the longest river frontage of all the Cambridge Colleges. It makes me happy to know that along with all the wonderful students, staff and academics of Magdalene, the wider public also have the opportunity to enjoy our gardens from the river and from Magdalene Bridge.

Overall, I would describe Magdalene’s gardens as beautiful, creating a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, amid the formality of the College setting.

When I am not working in the gardens, I am thinking or writing about soils, soil biodiversity and soil governance or looking down a microscope to identify soil organisms!’’
