we believe the harder you try to hold on to something, the faster it runs away. Parents need to be able to 'love with an open hand' โ€“ to give their child time and space to make their own discoveries โ€“ and their own mistakes โ€“ in order to develop vital skills for learning and for life. This can be difficult at times, but Skylark Learning can help by providing parents with wonderfully crafted playsets that focus on fostering these important skills.

โ€˜My First Emotionsโ€™ helps very young children recognise, understand and manage their emotions, and prepares them for dealing with the emotions of others. The set is also a great support for parents, who have lately come under fire for overcontrolled, โ€˜helicopterโ€™ parenting. Recent evidence shows that the more we try to cosset or over control our toddlers in an effort to protect them from life, the more likely the child is to develop behavioural and emotional problems later on.

Most recently, research by Dr Nicole Perry of the University of Minnesota published in the journal Development Psychology, found that helicopter parenting can negatively affect a childโ€™s ability to manage his or her emotions and behaviour. โ€œOur research showed that children with helicopter parents may be less able to deal with the challenging demands of growing up, especially with navigating the complex school environment.โ€

What emotion are you feeling today?

Relieved

Worried

Whatever the emotion you're feeling, you can communicate with words. Babies' emotions can get lost in translation. This is why our First Emotions' play set is ideal to teach babies how to express their emotions through play and reading.

"Innovation is Emotional", according to Ed Hess, Professor of Business Administration, in his Forbes article from 2017 https://www.forbes.com/sites/darden/2017/01/17/the-secret-sauce-of-innovation-emotions/2/ . Hess adds that research has also shown that negative emotions โ€“ especially fear and anxiety โ€“ have the opposite effect.
