We are proud to support the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education in improving sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in Sierra Leone.
Leh Wi Lan
Understanding sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is essential for adolescents to make informed decisions, stay safe and build strong futures.
That’s why we’re proud to support the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education SL in introducing the Comprehensive Adolescent Health and Life Skills (CAHLS) as a subject in secondary schools.
Through our CAHLS pilot in 50 Junior Secondary Schools, we’ve trained teachers to deliver SRH-related lessons. The response has been positive: 85% of students in pilot schools are participating weekly. However, due to the sensitivity of some topics, teaching them remain challenging because of cultural taboos.
To address this, we’re enhancing support for teachers through coaching, WhatsApp peer groups, and the distribution of new teacher guides and learner workbooks. And because CAHLS is embedded in the Social Studies curriculum, it doesn’t require additional budget, ensuring its sustainability.
Through our collaboration with MBSSE, UNFPA Sierra Leone, and other partners, we are creating a safe and healthy learning environment, equipping young people with the knowledge they need to thrive!
