Timing is everything when it comes to landing a teaching job in the UK. π
English language schools tend to ramp up hiring ahead of their busiest periods - think late spring before the summer rush, and again in late summer ahead of the autumn term. Summer intensive programmes in particular can drive a real surge in demand for qualified teachers.
The schools that fill roles fastest are usually the ones that move quickly. Which means if you wait until a vacancy appears to start preparing, you're already behind.
Here's what smart applicants do:
β
Get CELTA-qualified well before the hiring window opens
β
Have their CV and cover letter ready to go
β
Research schools and centres in their target cities ahead of time
β
Apply early - even when roles feel competitive
Whether you're eyeing London, Manchester, or a smaller city where demand for quality teachers is just as real, being prepared gives you a genuine edge.
If CELTA is still on your to-do list, now is the time to look at upcoming courses and get that sorted. Find out more at www.studycelta.com

Employed or self-employed English teacher - which suits you best?
Both paths can lead to a rewarding teaching career, but they offer very different day-to-day experiences.
As an employed teacher, you usually get more stability. Your timetable is often set for you, your income may be more predictable, and you may also get support from a school or language centre. This can be a great option if you value structure and steady work.
As a self-employed teacher, you often have more flexibility and control. You can choose your hours, set your rates, and decide who you work with. That freedom can be appealing, but it also means managing your own schedule, finding clients, and dealing with quieter periods.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some teachers prefer the security of employment, while others enjoy the independence of working for themselves.
It often comes down to what matters most to you: flexibility, stability, autonomy, or regular income.
