European bison act as agents of regeneration / ecosystem engineers by browsing and breaking up dense canopies, and their hooves scarify the soil allowing new plants to grow.

Which other species should we bring back to the UK?

The UK’s bison have just been given their very own bridges 🦬

Two new bridges have opened in West Blean and Thornden Woods near Canterbury, Kent allowing the UK’s free roaming European bison herd to access twice as much woodland

The bridges actually allow people to cross above the bison, while the animals travel underneath, keeping visitors and the huge animals safely separated. The new crossings have increased the herd’s available habitat from around 50 hectares to 100 hectares 🌳

The bison are part of the Wilder Blean rewilding project, where their natural behaviours such as grazing, browsing and trampling vegetation help create a more varied woodland habitat for other wildlife

The herd was initially cautious about using the new crossings, with the first bison venturing through at night. But camera traps and tracking data have since shown them exploring their newly accessible woodland 🪵

And this could get even bigger two more bridges are planned, which would eventually give the bison access to around 200 hectares of woodland

Cool, init

Thirty of our third years spent two days at Chester Zoo at the start of our Zoos and Zoo Animal module learning about zoo exhibit design this week, from landscape immersion to animal husbandry and education & interpretation. Big thank you to the zoo staff who ran two workshops for us, and showed us how their world-class sun bear exhibit is designed.

Our MSc students had a fantastic time on their field course to France - exploring a range of amazing habitats and learning about their ecology. The wildlife has been 👌, just look at that flamingo! 😍

We've just returned from our annual Shropshire field residential kindly hosted by the Field Studies Council at their Preston Montford HQ with our fantastic Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students!

Toby Carter, Sarah Hart, Jim Littlemore, Kevin Bright and Danni Green were so impressed by the enthusiasm, determination, and drive of our wonderful students! Activities ranged from a guided walk at Stiperstones NNR with Simon Cooter of Natural England, talks from the likes of Charlie Bell from the National Trust, and of course a whole host of fieldwork activities on the hunt for otters, polecats, great crested newts, white clawed crayfish, upland birds, ancient woodland flora, and more!

This field course is specifically designed to tackle Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) graduate competencies!

On a dreary Monday morning, feast your eyes on the wonderful images shared by student Adithyan K A! More cake anyone?!

Technical information shares form an important part of our employability agenda for Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students. So we were stoked to welcome in James Stevens and Antony Bagott from TRAFFIC to Anglia Ruskin University.

TRAFFIC provides evidence, solutions, and influence to ensure that trade in wild species is legal and sustainable for the benefit of the planet and people. Our special guests led an expert series of interactive seminars on how to fight illegal wildlife trade for our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

We are grateful to Stephanie Pendry in helping to set this valuable learning opportunity up for our students. And many thanks to our very own experts and session facilitators - Profs Danni Green and Jake Dunn.

This week our intrepid Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students joined myself and James McAdie from Froglife for the practical part of their protected species training kindly funded by Anglia Ruskin University!

On the hunt for amphibians, students were able to deploy and check humane capture funnel traps under license, carry out torch light surveys, as well undertake some biometric image capture of great-crested newts using our one of a kind 'Newt-onator' device for the latest iteration of our autonomous wildlife identification project with Maria J. Duarte Rosa and Chung-Man Tang!

Many thanks to Guy Belcher from Cambridge City Council and Lucy Robison-Smith BSc (Hons) MCIEEM from National Highways for access permissions.

Fun fact of the day - did you know the collective noun for newts is an 'armada'?!

Today we are stoked to welcome in Principal Arboriculturist & Town Planner Matt Searle from TreeWorks who is currently chatting to Animal and Environmental Biology at ARU in Cambridge students about the challenges of managing urban trees.

Matt is currently sharing some fascinating case-studies and is a true ambassador for upholding the environmental value of urban forests and the intricacies of tree care in lieu of development.
