On June 1st, at the in-person date of our conference, one of our presenters was subjected to transphobic and homophobic questioning following their presentation about anti-trans narratives in digital media. The question was not related to their research, and as a trans person, it created an extremely unsafe space for them where they had to publicly defend their right to be protected rather than get the opportunity to discuss and celebrate their research. We want to reiterate that we do not tolerate this kind of hate and that we believe all people should be protected, able to live freely, and celebrated and that those protections do not come at the expense of others. Instead, all people should be protected and cared for simultaneously. Trans lives matter and should always be valued in our conference and research spaces 🏳️‍⚧️
