Sponsored Hop, Skip or jump event this week!
We are pleased to announce that we will be holding a Sponsored Skip event to help raise funds towards the shortfall for the EYFS playground, following the success of a similar event a few years ago.
The event will take place during PE lessons this week. Children will take part in sponsored skipping sessions during their PE lessons.
Each child will bring home a sponsorship form and we
kindly ask that donations are returned in the envelopes provided. .The class that returns the highest number of completed sponsor envelopes will receive a small prize! We appreciate your support in helping us raise funds for this. Our Reception children deserve a welcoming
and inspiring outdoor space where they can play, explore, learn and grow. Sadly, our EYFS playground is now in urgent need of renovation.
The original play hill has badly eroded over time and the astroturf covering has worn away, exposing the concrete underneath. This means an important part of the children’s outdoor learning and play area can no longer be used safely or enjoyed as it should be.
Outdoor play is a vital part of early years education. It helps children build confidence, develop friendships, improve physical skills and spark their imagination every single day. By supporting this project, you will be helping us transform a tired and worn-out space into a safe, exciting and engaging playground for our youngest pupils.Every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference. Together, we can give our Reception children the playground they deserve - a place full of fun, discovery and happy memories.

Last week at Forest School 💦
Wow! It’s been wild, wet and windy but oh so much fun in The Wonder Woods this week! We’ve utilised the fact that we have no idea when it’s suddenly going to start raining by practising knots and den structures to rush into when needed. Many of Y6, Y5 and Y3 have
earned a Digital Badge in knots. Great job everyone!
Of course, with the rain comes the mini bests and we’ve enjoyed bug hunting too – with some impressive giants being discovered! When the sun has shown itself, we’ve laid out the rugs and used the mirrors to look upwards
and gasp at the amazing transformation of the woods over the half term. There are more branches covered in foliage than we ever remembered and it’s been nice creating shapes and patterns from them.
Children in EYFS had their first introduction to safe tree climbing this week, with some scaffolded support in place in the form of climbing stones. They were extremely brave and enthusiastic, prompting me to rename many of them after cats, monkeys, leopards and other such nimble creatures!

We were delighted to have M&M Productions visiting our school on Tuesday. They performed a classic adaptation of Alice in Wonderland for the whole school. Through storytelling, music and special effects, the performance transported the children into the magical world of theatre.
As part of the afternoon, Year 6 pupils also took part in a special 35-minute Stagecraft Workshop. This exciting session gave the children a behind-the-scenes insight into how an M&M production is brought to life — from set design and costumes to lighting and sound technology. The children also had the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with the actors afterwards.
This was a wonderful experience for all the children, and particularly rewarding for Year 6 following all their hard work during SATs week. The workshop also provided valuable insight into theatre performance, linking perfectly with their upcoming end-of-year production.

Last week at Forest School 🐝
It’s been a week about bees this week! We’ve created some bee homes from sawn bamboo canes and some children extended their learning to creating mini beast habitats and animal dens. We have also planted some more flowers to be in the Chelsea Flower Show spirit as well as to encourage the bees into our wildlife area!
The bluetit chicks from the nest in Forest School have now flown and the newts are making themselves known to us by crawling up out of the pond and settling themselves into little dark places under the logs and leaves. We finished our series of Forest School lessons with whittling and crafting light sabers!
Well done to Years R, 1, 2 and 4 for the amazing learning and progression of skills I’ve observed this half term and especially well done, as we’ve had every single weather option thrown at us this half term but stayed outside and enjoyed making the most of the rain, hail, wind, ice and
warm (sometimes baking hot) sunshine – whatever it’s chosen to be on each day, and sometimes all at once!

Ice cream factory success 🍦
Thank you to all the families who supported our Ice Cream Factory Day during School Census Day last Thursday!
We truly appreciate everyone who ordered a meal and helped make the event a success. Every meal purchased contributed towards funding for our school, helping us continue to provide exciting opportunities and resources for our pupils.
Thank you for your continued support and for being part of our wonderful school community!

Expert showcase
This week years 1, 3 and 4 have been showcasing their work to parents. It’s such a lovely opportunity for the children to show parents their work and we were so happy with how many parents came into school.
Apologies to year 1 and year 3 parents who ended up having their showcases on the same day. We realise this isn’t ideal and will ensure this doesn’t happen again next term.

Walk to School Week 18th- 22nd May
For their next campaign, the Milton Road Youth Citizens would like to encourage as many children and adults in our community to take part in Walk To School/Active Travel Week on 18th to 22nd May 2026. We know that the majority of our families come on bikes or walk to school, or scooter or roller blade and we want to encourage all sorts of active travel. During this week pupils will be encouraged to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or Park and Stride to school every day of the week. We know that for some families car travel is the only option, however, for this week of 18th to 22nd May, families might like to consider parking their car a bit further away and walking to school.
The Youth Citizens (and the school) remain concerned about road safety at the start of the day, particularly with the numbers of cars coming into the junction between Ascham Road and Geurney Way and the congestion this
creates. Whilst the majority of drivers obey the highway code, unfortunately a few parents continue to park on double yellow lines at the corners of the road, which is extremely dangerous and some even park on the zig-zags outside the school gates. Please remember that the school would prefer that families are a little bit late rather than break the law and potentially endanger other road users. Please just let the office know, If it has taken time to park safely. The Youth Citizens will be gathering data from their CREW mates to see if there has been any shift in types of travel, whilst fully appreciating that in several circumstances, change might not be possible.

Latest from Forest School 🔥
It’s been Feast Week in Forest School and what a feast we’ve enjoyed! We created jammy, sugar ring or apple and cinnamon ‘campfire’ donuts! They were delicious and because we ate them warm, dipped in bags of sugar, we even pretended we were at the Fun Fair! To get ourselves to the point of eating freshly cooked campfire donuts, we have spent the previous weeks using the billhook and knives to split kindling, and discussing food hygiene. The children helped whisk up an eggy batter for the donuts, we were careful with handwashing and using different tools for different fillings, and learning what happens to sugar when heated and cooled. In other very exciting news, we celebrated the 100th birthday of David Attenborough and witnessed a parent blue tit popping in and out of our nesting box with green scraps in their beak, and hearing lots of excited cheeping coming from within! We’re looking forward to watching for the babies to take flight!
Grateful thanks again to Eco Council for their work on keeping the flower beds and tubs watered through the hot, dry April weather and for helping throughout their lunch breaks on a Wednesday emptying the composting bins, levelling our compost heap, ensuring our Wonder Woods site is free from litter and a haven for wildlife as well as humans. On Wednesday we spent our whole lunchbreak carrying water to the pond as the levels were so low, we’ve been concerned the pond water is becoming toxic and it’s now looking very healthy and clear. Great effort – thank you Eco Council! Thank you
also to Ruth Corns for agreeing to fund and install a solar powered pump in the pond – we’ve enjoyed lots of conversations about the science behind it and how it’s good for the pond and good for the environment.
