๐ What Are Sensory Breaks?
Sensory breaks are intentional, planned periods during the day designed to help recalibrate the nervous system. ๐ง โจ
These breaks allow individuals to engage in activities that promote sensory processing, providing much-needed downtime to reset and recharge.
Whether in classrooms, workplaces, or at home, sensory breaks are essential in environments that might inadvertently lead to sensory overload. ๐
They are particularly helpful for individuals with sensory processing challenges, but the benefits can be felt by anyone looking to maintain balance in a stimulating world.
๐ ๏ธ Why Are They Important?
Sensory breaks:
Help manage and prevent sensory overload. ๐ฆ
Improve focus, mood, and overall well-being. ๐๐
Create opportunities for self-regulation and calm. ๐งโโ๏ธ
Support better engagement in daily activities, especially for those with sensory processing difficulties.
These breaks are simple to implement and incredibly effective. The best part? They donโt require any special equipment or elaborate setups.

With temperatures soaring across the UK, itโs important to remember that not all children recognise when their bodies are becoming too hot.
Children with interoceptive differences may not notice feelings of thirst, overheating, or discomfort. They might keep running, playing, or wearing extra layers long after their body is telling them to cool down.
Regular drink reminders, access to shade, cooling breaks, and water-rich foods such as watermelon, melon, oranges, grapes, and strawberries can make a real difference during periods of extreme heat.
