Reverse engineering collective action: complex technologies in stateless societies. An archaeological science project funded by an ERC Advanced Grant

Photos from Reverseaction's post 03/07/2026

🇬🇧 Snaps from Manziales 🌟 Nohora, Lina and our wonderful friend and collaborator Sandra Eraso Villota recently travelled to .caldas to attend the Congreso Colombiana de Arqueología.

Lina and Sandra shared the results of negative decoration experiments conducted with Asociación Comunitaria el Chalguar in July 2025 and Nohora discussed ongoing investigations into surface treatments on Nariño goldwork. Nohora said "our contribution focused on reconstructing pre-Hispanic goldworking technologies in Nariño through a multianalytical and experimental approach, highlighting the complexity of materials, techniques, and technical knowledge involved in these processes. It was also a valuable opportunity to engage with colleagues and share perspectives on technological traditions in Colombia."

Thank you to all of the conference organisers for a wonderful experience! 🎉

🇬🇧 "El Oro y El Universo: Saberes Indígenas de Colombia" opens today! 🎉

El Oro y El Universo is a brand new temporary exhibition at MARQ. Museo Arqueológico de Alicante, which showcases 291 archaeological beings from the collections of the Museo del Oro del Banco de la República, Bogotá, alongside those created by contemporary indigenous communities. The REVERSEACTION Project has had the exciting privilege of contributing to planning, organisation, results of scientific analysis and exhibition imagery.

From the press release: "The exhibition will be structured into seven interconnected units , organized into three main thematic blocks , all within a unique museographic, aesthetic, and sound environment. In addition, interspersed zoom points will provide further information on specific scientific analyses, recent research, and reflections of contemporary relevance"

🇨🇴🇪🇸 “El Oro y El Universo: Saberes Indígenas de Colombia” ¡abre hoy! 🎉

🇬🇧 In May, several members of REVERSEACTION attended the The International Symposium on Archaeometry (ISA) in Torino, Italy. More will follow on the Team's presentations, but for now we'd like to celebrate the fantastic achievement of REVERSEACTION MPhil Student, Mishael Quraishi, whose poster “Surface Treatments in Multi-Coloured Goldwork from Pre-Hispanic Nariño (Colombia): Analyses and Experiments”, won one of the two Martin J. Aitken student poster awards offered at this year's Symposium 🎉

Mishael's poster investigated how Nariño craftspeople engineered multi-coloured and multi-textured surfaces on gold-silver-copper sheet metal. Combining artefact analysis with experimental archaeology, and using characterisation techniques such as optical microscopy, pXRF, and SEM-EDS, the ongoing project aims to provide new insights into technological choices and craft practices in pre-Hispanic Colombian gilding and metalworking.

Poster co-authors: Nohora Bustamante, Agnese Benzonelli, Marcos Martinón-Torres

We gratefully acknowledge the Museo del Oro del Banco de la República for authorising study of the archaeological material and access to collections/samples, expertise, and database information from decades of research by Museum staff.
