Just sharing one of our experiences that you might find helpful for your own child.
One of our students was naturally stronger in English than in Maths. So, we began teaching her Maths as if it were a language — using a language-based learning approach. Over time, she started to understand the concepts better. However, she still struggled when it came to solving problems.
To dig deeper, we gave her diagnostic questions to explore how she thinks. We discovered that she preferred flowchart-based learning — she would look for key words to identify what type of problem she was dealing with. If the keywords weren’t familiar, she would get confused. So, we adapted our method: we provided her with all the key trigger words that help identify a problem type, followed by what the question required, and finally the method to solve it. We encouraged her to write all of this down to make her feel more secure and structured.
Although she improved, she didn’t reach the level required to pass the 11+ exam. As her teacher, I feel I could have done more — but I’m proud that she became more confident and is now applying what she learned with us in her dance training. That, in itself, is a win.
In another case, a different student struggled to remember formulas and properties, though she was excellent at applying them once recalled. For her, we introduced mnemonics or "magic words" to help her retain the key concepts. It worked! She’s now thriving, no longer needs our support, and has moved on to independent learning — exactly what we aim to achieve with our students.
This is just one example of our approach — feel free to try these methods with your own children or students.
Wishing you all the best on your learning journey!
