Which GCSEs are the most important?
The most important subjects are English and Maths, which are required for most courses, apprenticeships, jobs, and university degrees. Before you can get into these, you will usually need a grade 4 or higher in Math and English. So, if you can get those grades, you will likely have a larger number of opportunities.
Some sixth forms and the majority of colleges provide a variety of Math and English courses for students who need to retake one or both of these subjects after the age of 16. Whether you enter an apprenticeship, sixth form, or college, you must continue to study Maths and English alongside your other studies until you reach the age of 18 or achieve a grade 4.

Plans for exams in 2022 explained - from study aids to advance notice of topics
GCSE and A-Level exams are due to return next summer after formal assessments were scrapped for two years running due to coronavirus
Record numbers of pupils have received top A-Level grades this year after formal exams were scrapped for the second year due to the pandemic.
More than two in five (44.8%) students were awarded A or A* marks this summer - up from 38.5% last year.
Ministers were desperate to avoid a repeat of last summer's exams chaos, which led to thousands of students seeing their marks downgraded by a computer algorithm.
Instead, pupils have been given grades based on assessments by their teachers, using a mix of in-class tests, mock exams and course work.
Formal exams were axed due to the massive disruption caused by Covid over the past two school years.
And A-Levels and GCSEs are not expected to return to their pre-pandemic state next summer.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said he hoped to move back to a more normal exam series next year.
Announcing the consultation, the Department for Education (DfE) said: "While the Government intends for exams to go ahead in 2022, it will continue to work with Ofqual on contingency plans in the event that it is not possible for exams to go ahead fairly and safely in 2022.
"These arrangements will not be necessary for exams in 2023."

The two years of replacement grades, after exams were cancelled in the pandemic, have had significantly higher results, for GCSEs and A-levels.
Exam officials say it reflects that no one has had a bad day in an exam and that pupils had multiple chances to show their best potential.
