With the current news focusing on tutors I think it is very important to remind parents how necessary it is to check that their chosen tutor has an up to date (preferably enhanced) DBS check.
I have an enhanced DBS certificate which is updated yearly. This means that each year my my records are checked to ensure I have had no new incidents that may alter my enhanced DBS status.
The following information comes from the government guide lines. It is a bit of a read but may be helpful to parents new to education safety practices.
“A DBS check is a way for employers check your criminal record, to help decide whether you are a suitable person to work for them. This includes deciding whether it is suitable for you to work with children or vulnerable adults.
DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. This is the public body that carries out DBS checks. They used to be carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). So you may still see or hear them called 'CRB checks'.”
When I add my DBS certificate to the Update Service, the DBS will keep my certificate up-to-date by regularly searching to see if any new information has come to light since its issue.
If new information is identified when the service carry out the checks, I would receive a letter notifying me of the change and advising me of what to do next.
For all enhanced DBS certificates the DBS certificate status will change if:
* new convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings are identified; or
* any amendment or change to a current conviction, caution, warning or reprimand are identified
* any new, relevant police information is identified

A sobering read as I wait to hear how my students have done in their GCSEs.
It’s inevitable, and in my opinion right, that the spread of results return to their pre pandemic levels.
However this is no consolation to the cohort involved.
But students must remember that their results are just as valid as those who were generously teacher assessed in 2020.
The goal posts have changed but the spread of grades should remain the same.
Be proud of what you have achieved as you move onto to the next phase of your great adventure 🦹🏼♀️

This is my friend David Grove who I’ve known for 25 years.
Although Dave’s only recently started teaching he’s always been an excellent mathematician. I can always rely on him to complete a level 9 GCSE maths question that might fox me.
Dave is very friendly and personable.
I would highly recommend him to any of my GCSE students who want to take their maths further, or to parents asking for an A level maths tutor.

Well that’s it, I’ve just taught my last year 11 as they head for their final exam on Monday.
This is the only bit I don’t enjoy, saying goodbye.
Many of these students have been with me for over a year and they feel like a part of my family. I will truly miss each and every one of them.
Fly high year 11’s and enjoy your summer break, you’re nearly there 🦹🏼♀️

Spring term update:
I am now fully booked for lessons this term.
If you would like to join my waiting list I can contact you when I have availability.
If you would like some extra lessons in half term or holidays then I can offer these at any time during the day. With GCSEs coming up holiday lessons can be an excellent way of checking topics that need finessing, or relearning!
I have availability during the day for children who are homeschooled. These lessons can be once or more times a week and I have plenty of flexibility with days and times.
Many thanks for your support as always 🦹🏼♀️.
