Thursday 1st October was National Poetry Day, so Reception and Year 1 spent some time learning a poem together as a class called Feelings Are Like Weather. 🌤🌧🌩🌈

Using pictures and actions, the children worked together to learn the poem and brought it to life brilliantly. It linked beautifully with our Whole Class Project and gave us a lovely opportunity to think about how our feelings can change, just like the weather. 💚💙💛

🥔🍎 Class 3 back at Harewood Farm! 🌱

Another wonderful morning of hands-on learning at Harewood Farm! The children dug up potatoes, discovering there were fewer than expected, which sparked discussions about how the summer drought has affected farmers and the food we eat.

They then prepared their own potato wedges, enjoyed freshly pressed apple juice and explored the fascinating fungi growing in the woodland. 🍄

We would like to say a massive thank you to Cousin jacks specialist welding, who came to the rescue of Calstock School this week. We needed a piece of kitchen equipment welding and Aaron was brilliant. Within a couple of days the job was completed and at no cost to the school. We are incredibly grateful for this kind gesture and the great job done. 🤩

Break and lunchtime give our children the chance to mix across the age groups, from Nursery right through to Year 6.

It’s lovely to see older children looking out for younger ones, children learning from one another and friendships developing naturally across the school. 💛

Research into mixed-age settings suggests that these interactions can support children’s social skills, communication and prosocial behaviours.

A lovely part of everyday life at Calstock. 🌿

🍁🍂 Another lovely visit to Harewood Farm! 🎃

Class 3 had another fantastic visit to Harewood Farm this week. The children enjoyed picking a variety of squash, including some that they had helped to plant earlier in the year.

We then warmed up with some delicious autumnal squash soup before helping to pop dried beans, ready to be planted next year. It was a lovely opportunity to see the journey from planting to harvesting and enjoy some of the produce along the way! 🍂🥣

What a fantastic start to the year in Class 3! We began by working together to create our classroom expectations before taking on some whole-class problem-solving challenges. 🤝

The children showed brilliant communication, teamwork and perseverance, while learning how important it is to listen to and value everyone’s ideas and abilities.

We also wrote letters to our future selves, setting goals for the year ahead. These will be kept safely and returned in the final week of the school year, giving us a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come! ✉️✨

🌿📖 Forest Journalling in Class 2 📖🌿

Class 2 have been enjoying their weekly Forest Journalling sessions, bringing their literacy learning outdoors and finding inspiration in the natural world around them. 🌳🍂

This week, we focused on setting descriptions, using the woods as inspiration. The children explored the sights, sounds, smells and textures around them before turning their observations into descriptive writing.

It was lovely to see the children slowing down, noticing the little details and using their imaginations to bring the woodland setting to life in their writing. ✏️🌲

Who needs a classroom when you have a forest full of ideas? 💛💚💙
