💚 Celebrating a Year of Work Experience

Over the past year, one of our learners has been completing a weekly work placement at Coombe House Residential Home, becoming a valued part of the team.

From helping with kitchen duties, washing up and preparing food to chatting with residents during activities, they've grown in confidence with every visit. It's been wonderful to see them build relationships, develop new skills and become more independent in a real working environment.

Work experience isn't just learning a job. It builds confidence, develops communication skills and encourges students to become part of the local community.

A huge thank you to everyone at Coombe House for the encouragement, patience and support they've shown throughout the year. Partnerships like this give our learners meaningful opportunities to succeed, and we're incredibly grateful to work alongside such a welcoming team.

💷 7 Tips for Teaching Young People with SEND About Budgeting

Budgeting isn't just about money—it builds confidence, independence and the ability to make informed choices. Here are some simple ways to help young people develop these important life skills.

1️⃣ Make it real
Use everyday situations like shopping for groceries or buying lunch to practise managing money.

2️⃣ Start with a budget
Give a set amount to spend and work together to decide what to buy. Encourage learners to compare prices and think about value for money.

3️⃣ Plan meals together
Choosing recipes, writing a shopping list and buying ingredients helps develop planning, maths and decision-making skills.

4️⃣ Use cash as well as cards
Handling coins and notes can help learners understand the value of money before moving on to contactless payments or budgeting apps.

5️⃣ Break tasks into small steps
Shopping, budgeting and cooking can feel overwhelming. Breaking each activity into manageable stages helps build confidence.

6️⃣ Celebrate good choices
Budgeting isn't about getting everything right. Praise learners when they compare prices, stick to a budget or make thoughtful decisions.

More Than Just Cooking

Cooking is a regular part of college life at TST, and it's one of the sessions our learners always look forward to.

Each week, learners work together to prepare a different meal, building their confidence in the kitchen while developing practical skills they'll use throughout their lives. From making our much-loved Cornish pasties and homemade pizzas to baking cakes for our Graduation Ceremony, every recipe brings a new opportunity to learn.

Throughout the year, we also explore different cultures through food. During Black History Month, for example, learners baked Zimbabwean cupcakes, discovering new flavours while learning about the traditions and stories behind them.

There's so much learning taking place around the kitchen table. Measuring ingredients develops maths skills, following a recipe encourages reading and sequencing, and timing helps learners understand organisation and planning. Along the way, they're communicating, working as a team, making decisions and, of course, enjoying the sense of achievement that comes from creating something themselves.

For many of our learners, cooking is about much more than preparing a meal. It's about building confidence, becoming more independent and learning skills they'll use at home, in the workplace and throughout adult life.

And sharing the finished meal together is always the perfect way to end the session. 💚

🛒 Learning for Life

A regular trip to the local Tesco has become an important part of our week.

Before we head to the shops, learners work together to decide what they'd like to cook, write a shopping list and agree on a budget. At Tesco, they compare prices, find the ingredients they need and make choices about what to buy.

Back at college, it's time to cook!

These sessions are about so much more than preparing a meal. Along the way, learners are building confidence with shopping, handling money, making decisions, following recipes, working as a team and developing communication skills.
By practising these everyday tasks regularly, they become more familiar, helping learners feel more confident and independent both in college and out in the community.

It's always lovely to see learners encouraging one another, trying new things and taking pride in what they've achieved – not to mention enjoying the finished meal together!

🌊 Discovering Marine Life at Hannafore Beach

Our learners recently enjoyed a marine biology visit to Hannafore Beach near Looe, where they explored the foreshore and rock pools, taking part in a beach survey and discovering the incredible wildlife living along our coastline.

Using our magnifier, learners examined the samples they had collected, giving them the chance to see marine life up close and learn more about the environment on our doorstep.

For some, this was a completely new experience, making the day even more memorable.

After exploring the beach, we enjoyed a walk along the coast path before stopping at the beach café, where learners confidently ordered and paid for their own ice creams – another opportunity to build communication and independent living skills.

A fantastic day of learning, exploring and trying something new. Well done, everyone! 💚

🚶 Travel Training Tip: Staying Safe Near Roads

Learning to travel independently is an important step towards adulthood, and road safety is a key part of that journey.

At TST, our learners regularly practise road safety skills within the community. This includes using zebra crossings, recognising when it is safe to cross on quieter roads where there isn't a crossing, and building awareness of traffic and their surroundings.
Here are a few reminders to practise together:

🚦 Stop, look, listen and think before crossing.
👀 Make eye contact with drivers where possible.
🚶 Use zebra crossings whenever they are available.
📵 Keep phones and headphones away while crossing the road.
⏳ Never rush—wait until it is safe.

Regular practice helps build confidence, independence and good habits that learners can use every day.

💚 Learning these skills takes time, but every journey is a step towards greater independence.

Royal Cornwall Show

Earlier in the summer and for the second year running, the school group entered the Royal Cornwall Show.

One of our students took part in the photography competition and attended a photography lesson before going out to find a suitable subject for his photographs. He showed excellent resilience and determination while trying to photograph a peacock with its feathers fully displayed. After many attempts and a great deal of patience, they captured the perfect shot. His perseverance paid off, and he was awarded 1st place in the photography section, helping the school retain its success from the previous year.

They also entered the craft competition, creating a picture of turtles using sea glass. He demonstrated resilience throughout the project, overcoming challenges and persisting with the task despite difficulties. After several sessions of careful work, he successfully completed his artwork, he was awarded a 4th place rosette in a highly competitive class.

These achievements highlight this young persons creativity, determination, and resilience. He showed excellent commitment to both projects and should be extremely proud of his success at the Royal Cornwall Show.

They provide an opportunity for families, learners and professionals to come together to celebrate progress, discuss what's working well and look at the next steps towards achieving future goals.

At TST, we see Annual Reviews as much more than a meeting. They're a chance to listen to our learners, recognise how far they've come and make sure the support in place continues to meet their needs.
