🐾 MEET THE TEAM! 🐾
Ever wondered who’s behind the scenes in Animal Management at Duchy College? 👀 Today, we’re introducing Hannah, one of our Study Programme Managers.

👋 Name:
Hannah

🎓 What do you teach/do at Duchy college?
I am the programme manager for second year level 3 students, bridging the gap between college and university. I am also an advanced practitioner working to help develop other teacher’s skills and confidence. I am a livestock/animal agriculture specialist, I love everything farm especially sheep + cows!

🐾 Favourite animal of all time + why?
Wombats – I think they are adorable! But also, very misunderstood and incredibly well adapted to their environment. Their pouches (like a kangaroo) face backwards so that when they dig burrows, they don’t flick dirt onto their joeys.

🎓 What made you want to work in Animal Management?
I am particularly passionate about animal welfare. I believe that animal management teaching isn't simply about producing people who can look after animals. It's about developing professionals who understand why good welfare matters and can advocate for better standards throughout the industry.

💡 Favourite thing about working with students:
Many learners arrive knowing they want to work with animals but don't yet know what that career could look like. I like to help them develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to reach their goals and realise their potential.

🐶 Favourite animal-related fact:
Wombat’s produce cube shaped p**p so that they form stacks and don’t roll away, in order to mark their territory.

🏆 Most memorable moment in your career so far?
I have many! From going on a 2-week conservation safari in South Africa with students to attending the Cornwall College Shining Star Awards evening this year with one of my students who won an award!

🌟 One piece of advice for anyone thinking about studying Animal Management:
Animal Management is a broad and changing sector. New research, legislation, technologies, conservation approaches and welfare practices mean there is always something new to explore and you must be open minded and adaptable for the best interests of the animals.

😂 Something students might not know about me:
I love video games! I spend far too much time playing Sims, Avatar Final Frontier, Hogwarts Legacy to name a few. I’m a proper cosy hobby girl – I read fantasy books, write poetry, play the violin and have an obscene colouring pen collection… 😂

📸 You can usually find me:
In the animal management office or the library, possibly at the farm!

💬 Ask me about:
My area of expertise is farm animal welfare, production systems, genetic/rare breed conservation and management. Ask me about cows, sheep, pigs, chickens etc….! I have lambed thousands of sheep and managed large dairy herds on country estates – I am particularly passionate about conservation of rare livestock breeds.

Ever wondered who’s behind the scenes in Animal Management at Duchy College? 👀
Today, we’re introducing Grace one of our lecturers!

👋 Name: Grace

🎓 What do you teach/do at Duchy college?
I’m a lecturer, teaching all levels across animal management- but I particularly enjoy/specialise in exotics.

🐾 Favourite animal of all time + why?
Humpback Whale- they are so beautiful! They undertake the longest migration of any mammal with pinpoint accuracy, yet we know almost nothing about how they navigate so precisely.

🎓 What made you want to work in Animal Management?
I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t absolutely obsessed with animals and the natural world. I read every animal fact book as a child, studied Animal Management at college, then worked at a wildlife park as a keeper for many years before coming to Duchy.

💡 Favourite thing about working with students:
I love helping them find their confidence! Whether that’s with handling animals they are fearful of or speaking in front of others I will be their cheerleader and show them just how fantastic they are.

🐶 Favourite animal-related fact:
The difference between snakes and lizards is nothing to do with legs… Snakes do not have eyelids, but lizards do. (Just to confuse you even more- slow worms are not worms, but in fact legless lizards!)

🏆 Most memorable moment in your career so far?
Getting to see Humpback Whales in the wild on our study tour of Costa Rica.

🌟 One piece of advice for anyone thinking about studying Animal Management:
If you are prepared to get cold and soggy, hot and sweaty, tired and grubby, then you will absolutely reap the rewards of working with animals. Your hard work providing care for them will allow you to learn their personalities, earn their trust, and receive so much joy from them in return. Remember on the tough days that it is an honour to care for others.

😂 Something students might not know about me:
I play the ukulele and guitar and have also starred in a number of pantomimes… Some may say I’m quite the drama queen!

📸 You can usually find me:
Walking my dog, Hooper- or you’ll probably hear me before you see me as I often sing a tune on my way around campus.

💬 Ask me about:
Anything exotics-related or working with zoo animals. (Don’t ask me how to exist without dog hair or slobber on clothes- I haven’t quite worked that one out yet!)

Caroline

🎓 What do you teach/do at Duchy college?
I am level 2 Study Programme Manager and also teach all levels with a specific interest in animal nursing and animal health.

🐾 Favourite animal of all time + why?
Donkey, having worked with them for a period of time after first leaving Duchy college myself, i find their characters so endearing, being stubborn, opinionated and cuddly all in one.

🎓 What made you want to work in Animal Management?
As someone who struggled in school and thrived working and learning around animals, I wanted to support learners in also being able to reach their full ability.

💡 Favourite thing about working with students:
Being able to see such growth in an individual and being part of their journey and they always keep you on your toes 😊.

🐶 Favourite animal-related fact:
Donkey’s have more strength than a horse of the same size and can live up to 50 years.

🏆 Most memorable moment in your career so far?
Too many to mention however, always seeing learners realise their ability, watching them grow and develop into adult hood.

🌟 One piece of advice for anyone thinking about studying Animal Management:
You need to be prepared to get your hands dirty, you will be working with animals that need you to survive and thrive and this is an honour in itself. Be kind to all around you, both human and animals, everyone deserves to be here.

😂 Something students might not know about me:
I have two horses JJ and Monty and we compete in British Dressage.

Walking my dog Stanley or with my horse Monty on the yard.
