UPDATE - Break from classes 🩡

Hi folks πŸ‘‹

I'm popping this on here for any students who aren't aware that this break between terms will be slightly longer than usual.

My health has not been 100% for a while and despite pushing through, I went for some advice last year for long covid symptoms and am currently getting some investigations into my heart and lung function. Currently have a 7 day heart monitor on which is a cool piece of medtech by CardioScan, although my tan lines will be terrible!

I won't waffle too much here but basically if I carried on the same (even at my much reduced pace) my chances of full recovery from the many symptoms I've been experiencing would be diminished.

As the long summer nights generally mean low attendance levels anyway, it seemed a good decision all round to take an extended break from teaching publicly every week and means you guys can get out in the sun.

I love teaching so I will be back - and will likely start with some pop-up sessions before beginning a new term. Any classes owed to you will of course be honoured πŸ’“.

In the meantime I'm enjoying pacing my activities and energy levels with gentle exercise (and lots of assistance from my lovely Chris), spending time by the sea, reconnecting with pals and chilling out with my cats (standard 🐈).
Oh, and some work on health conferences in my other part-time job too πŸ™Œ.

Hope you are all having a wonderful break, see you sometime soon!

Love always,
Ella xx

How vibrant is North Wales!? It's positively luminous in the sunshine. β˜€οΈ

My brain soaks up all the colours and feels soothed every time I have a chance to simply gaze at all the blue hues and greenery.

I shouldn't need to prove that viewing nature has been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels and has therapeutic effects... as it's obvious right?! But if you do want a published scientific systematic review, I've shared one in my stories 😊 ().

What else should be obvious for reducing stress in the body? (You may know where I'm going with this... πŸ˜‚)
β€’ Connection to yourself and progressive relaxation of muscles (Yoga Nidra)
β€’ Actively encouraging an extended exhalation (various Pranayama e.g. Brahmari)
β€’ Focused awareness of senses and surroundings and thoughts (mindful awareness, Dharana)
β€’ Moving the body intentionally through positions which maintain healthy muscles, joints and tissues and help overall functioning (Asana).

And many more!

We'll do these in most sessions I teach - would you like to join us?!

Class is back tonight (6.15pm and 7.45pm, both for improvers) and Monday (6.10pm improvers, 7.35pm beginner friendly).

Pop me a message for more info, or link in bio to book!

See you later 😘

Can you identify this mudra?

Or recall what is associated with practising it? πŸ€”

In many Yoga classes in the West there is an emphasis on full body movements as the main focus of a practice. Seemingly it appears (especially on social media) that the deeper or more complex a pose, the more 'enlightened' a person is. Or the more strenuous the practice, the more cleansing... this pursuit of 'suffering' in the public domain to gain a sense of spiritual superiority.

Can you see the problem with this?

Having or supporting this narrative continues to separate rather than unite. We ignore the very essence of Yoga teachings in several ways. Whether that's separation from others in our community, or a separation from the parts of ourself that allow a deep connection to all living things.

If we were to believe the above, it suggests that people with physical disabilities cannot ever reach Yogic states of bliss, of harmony. That our physical competence far outweighs the importance of mental "fitness". That we must also separate from our body's experience in order to dominate it, in the name of perceived ascendancy.

Whoa, now. That's a whole lot of stuff and thinking patterns to unpick. Unfortunately, advertising also emphasises youth and ableness too - so we're bombarded with these concepts frequently.

I don't have all the answers.

I won't even suggest that what I do is the best way of doing things.

But what I would ask you to consider is, in your Yoga practice (or any kind of hobby, sport, belief, even parenting to some level) do you feel it offers more than just a way to stroke your ego - especially if you pay for it as a class. Does it provide an all-around richness, a sense of wellbeing - but not at the expense of other people. Does it support and uplift others too?

Or perhaps a better way to word that is - do you engage with it in a way that offers more than a boost to your ego?

If you find that this makes you feel defensive - a reminder that for some people, they sit with the discomfort of other people's ego-based narrative every day.

We cannot deny the effects of privilege, we can only learn from them and try to do better.

πŸ’«LIMITED SPACES - open for bookings for everyone now!

For summer opening times at Beacon Climbing Centre I've changed the timings so we're running a touch earlier in April and May:

~ 6.10pm - Improver/ Intermediates Flow
~ 7.35pm - Beginner Friendly Yoga

---> STARTING MONDAY 24TH!

We will continue to look at various topics in Yoga Philosophy - this term is the Kleshas ('afflictions') and how we may find ourselves meeting these mental states time and time again in our lives. Whilst these states are inevitable as humans - there's hope, we do have options!

I'll share tools each week for bringing our awareness back to who we truly are, our 'essence' as a being and to anchor our understanding in reality.
Very often we can become consumed by our thoughts which can colour our perceptions... However, practicing yoga in all its forms is a great way of reclaiming our awareness and for grounding ourselves in the present moment.

Sound like something you'd be keen to try?

》Book in quickly to reserve your space! Places are limited this month, so to avoid disappointment, head straight to:
bookwhen.com/naliniyoga

4 classes this term over 5 weeks - discount available (Β£34) for booking the block! Β£9 for single sessions.

Any queries, pop me a message - see you Monday folks!

What a start to April yesterday!! A burst of sunshine and bright colours down by Criccieth πŸ₯° felt very welcome after what's seemed like a long winter...

And with that in mind I'm going to have a little spring break for the Easter holidays! Not going anywhere exciting (as I have a new job πŸ₯³) but I will take some little adventures and have a break from teaching to allow the creative juices to return.

There's plenty here in N Wales to see so I'll share some bits with you when I can!

Take care and wishing everyone a wonderful Easter. 🐣 😊 ❀️ πŸ™πŸ½

🌱 Unexpected outcomes 🌻

So how many of us have followed what seems like a clear pathway, only to find once we reach that destination (perhaps even one we've dreamed of) that the way forward from there - the gate so to speak - is now not so obvious? πŸ€”

Perhaps sometimes there's another open gate. An opportunity or option we haven't considered previously.

Do we continue onwards with what we did know, though perhaps that gate is now slightly blocked, the path unclear - or do we go through an relatively open gate, an inviting path beyond.

Either way, we never truly know what's at the end of either path. As land changes hands, weather prevails and some things are just out of our control!

So where am I going with this. Does it matter which path we take? Not really... Because once we set on that path, we do just deal with what happens as it comes. We never know the true outcome of the other option - as we can only choose one!

But why not take an option that FEELS more logical, efficient, or exciting?

In this situation, both paths led home. But I took the inviting open gate, the less complicated option, the most fluid.

It made sense in a way that life choices don't always seem to.

But perhaps that's because we're less attached to gates πŸ˜† and more attached to dreams and ideas - even if they don't end up the way we imagined.

It doesn't mean you've failed. Just that after following that path, adapting along the way and collecting knowledge - another gate has opened.

😊

See some of you later! We will be looking at tapas, discipline, transformation, our inner fire πŸ”₯.
