Just wanted to thank everyone for your interest and especially those who joined us. Also to share, not just mine but also others considerable disappointment at not completing the voyage.
In 40 years of cruising, 20 in Shantih, I have not experienced, after almost 3 weeks of trying, being unable to sail south because of relentless strong, occasionally gale force SW winds. The expection was to arrive in Gibraltar by mid September not sheltering in Padstow!
Time constraints and the weather predictions across Biscay and along the Iberian Peninsula forced the decision to sail north back to Caernarfon. Too late to reverse that decision the winds then came from the North, almost never dropping below 6 to return with wind on the bow once again so slogging along on the engine 🙄!
Was the Universe calling .... nah I don't believe in that stuff, just very unprecedented conditions after hurricane Erin disrupted the weather patterns.
So we will plan to go south again next year and start earlier around end of June aiming with a 6 week window to cruise in fair weather, no pressure, no deadlines to arrive mid August somewhere along latitude N35° 🤞🌊🌬⛵️.

Voyage South Postponed ⛵️
After what’s been a truly spectacular summer of blue skies, fair winds, and unforgettable sailing, it’s with a heavy heart that we’ve made the decision not to continue to head south this year.

The weather systems trailing behind Hurricane Erin have brought unpredictable and prolonged low pressure patterns, not ideal for a voyage that relies on anything other than south-westerlies! With limited time and less-than-ideal forecasts, the only sensible course is not to continue.

🌊 Shantih will return to her home berth in Victoria Dock, Caernarfon, where she’ll be available for RYA training courses until the end of October.

So, while we may not be heading for sunnier shores this time, there’s still plenty of adventure ahead. Whether you’re looking to start your sailing journey or gain new qualifications, we’ll be here to help you navigate it.

We will be sharing photos and videos from the trip so far however so keep your eyes peeled for those 👀🐬

Here’s to fairer winds in 2026 and a renewed push for the Voyage South next season.

Bon Voyage! ☀
We’ve officially set sail on our voyage south! The first few days brought plenty of wind (and a few salty splashes), but the breeze has settled, and we’re now enjoying some truly beautiful sailing along the British coast.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of open water, fresh air, and a horizon full of adventure.

Our annual Voyage South is a great opportunity for serious sailors to log sea miles. If you’re working towards sailing qualifications (including RYA) and need experience on the open water, this trip is for you. We’ll be sailing up to 1500 miles where you’ll have the opportunity to get involved with all aspects of living onboard and sailing a comfortable cruising yacht.

If you’re looking for yacht sailing experience this summer, you’ve come to the right place, Shantih Marine and the Anglesey School of Yachting ⛵

We’re sailing Shantih from North Wales to Spain during August and are inviting crew to join us on board on a shared expenses basis.

📆 Departing Caernarfon 28th August for first leg to Newlyn then continuing to France and Spain.

From Newlyn following the French coast (2 new crew joining in La Rochelle) then south towards Biarritz and west to A Coruna. South again to Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean.

Join the voyage at any point for a week or two or three if you can get away. Up to 1500 nautical miles can be logged, an opportunity for aspiring skippers and crew to build sea miles and experience.

Anticipate 3 – 4 weeks, weather will decide! 🌞

Join the skipper an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and experienced sailors and crew on a well-run, adventure-filled passage along some of Europe’s most beautiful coast.

🇪🇸 The yacht will be available for charter along the Costa Blanca, Calpe, Moraira, Denia and Balearics from September until April 2026.
