💙 Pre-Writing in Action ✏️

Following on from our playdough fun this week, we took our pre-writing exploration one step further with some simple pattern work from earlyyearsoutdoor ✍️

The children used whiteboard pens to trace over different patterns – wavy lines, spirals and zigzags – building confidence and control as they went. They loved watching the marks appear and talking about how their pens moved!

✨ These patterns might look simple, but they are powerful building blocks for writing. They help strengthen hand and finger muscles, improve control and coordination, and support the development of left-to-right movement – all essential foundations for handwriting. 💪

🌿 We’re big believers in pre-writing without pressure. Instead, we focus on playful, meaningful opportunities that build the skills children need, in the right order and at the right time. 💙

This follows beautifully from our playdough activities, where the children were strengthening and developing the muscles needed for these next steps.

💡 Learning through play, one squiggle at a time! 😊

🌟 Playdough Fun & Learning! 🌟

The children are showing a real interest in playdough at the moment, so this week we had two opportunities to explore it — and they certainly made the most of them! 😊

Both sessions gave the children plenty of time to investigate the material and discover how it reacts when we squeeze, squash, roll, stretch, poke and manipulate it. There was lots of curiosity as they explored what they could make and how the playdough changed depending on what they did with it.

Playdough is also fantastic for developing those all-important hand and finger muscles, helping to build the strength, coordination and control needed for future writing. ✏️💪

Pre-writing skills don’t start with a pencil and a worksheet — they start with movement, strength, mark-making, sensory exploration and lots of opportunities to use those developing muscles. This is something highlighted beautifully in this article by Alistair Bryce-Clegg, which explores why developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences are so important before formal handwriting practice.

And, of course, there’s so much more happening through this simple play — creativity, imagination, sensory exploration, problem-solving and fine motor development all rolled into one! ❤️

We’ve had lots of ocean-themed garden fun this week! 🌊🐚

The children’s imaginations have been in full flow as they created delicious “ice creams” in the sand tray using cones, scoops and even sticks for chocolate flakes! 🍦 They also baked shell muffins and muddy muffins in the outdoor kitchen, served up rock pool tea, and enjoyed plenty of water play with the boats.

Open-ended play like this encourages creativity, communication, problem-solving and teamwork, while allowing the children to follow their own ideas and interests. It’s been wonderful to watch their confidence and imagination grow as they explored our ocean-themed outdoor environment. 💙

There’s plenty more ocean-themed learning to come, so keep an eye on our page to see what else we discover beneath the waves! 🐠🦀🐙

🌊🐠 A wonderful day exploring somewhere new! 🐠🌊

Today, as part of our ocean theme, we enjoyed a visit to Matlock Bath Aquarium. The children loved discovering all the different fish and took time to look really carefully at their fascinating features. We spotted the catfish’s long whiskers, watched the tiny shrimps, and admired the beautiful shiny scales on many of the fish. It was a lovely opportunity to encourage curiosity, observation and lots of conversation.

One of the highlights was feeding the hungry carp in the thermal pool, before exploring the fascinating hologram exhibition, which the children found both intriguing and exciting. There were plenty of giggles in the hall of mirrors too!

After all that exploring, we enjoyed a picnic lunch together before heading to the playground, where everyone could burn off some energy with lots of climbing, running and active play.

A fantastic day full of new experiences, exploration and learning through play. 💙

Inspired by our summer holidays and trips to the beach, this week’s theme has been all about the seaside and life under the sea! 🌊🐚🐠

The children have loved exploring a sensory tray filled with colourful, sparkly chickpeas, shells and stone fish. As they scooped, sorted and searched for hidden treasures, they were busy developing their fine motor skills, imaginative play and language, while chatting about the creatures they might find beneath the waves.

Sensory play is such a wonderful way to encourage curiosity, exploration and learning through play, and this seaside invitation certainly sparked lots of conversation and imaginative storytelling. We can’t wait to see where our underwater adventures take us next! 🐙

What a lovely morning we’ve had at Pomeroy Farm Pomeroy Caravan Park! 🌿🐑🌼

The children had a wonderful time meeting all of the animals, with feeding the friendly goats and sheep being a definite highlight of the morning. They were full of excitement and curiosity as they chatted about the different animals they could see.

Afterwards, we wandered through the most beautiful field of wildflowers. The children loved running through the flowers, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of nature, and we even stopped for a few photographs to capture the moment.

Rather than rushing on, we took time to slow down and really observe the wildflowers. The children carefully looked at the different colours, shapes and textures before creating their own beautiful watercolour paintings inspired by what they could see. It was such a lovely opportunity to encourage creativity, observation skills and an appreciation of the natural world.

To finish our day, we enjoyed a picnic together in the sunshine before heading home, tired but full of happy memories. 💚

One of this week’s activities was inspired by the children’s love of Magnatiles and dinosaurs! 🦕🧲

I created some simple dinosaur challenge cards for the children to recreate using the Magnatiles. I have to admit, my dinosaur drawings weren’t exactly masterpieces! We shared a joke about this, which led to lots of giggles and conversations about which dinosaur each one was supposed to be.

After having a go at copying the challenge cards, the children loved using their own imaginations to design and build their very own dinosaurs. It was wonderful to see their creativity, problem-solving skills and perseverance as they experimented with different shapes and worked out how to bring their ideas to life.

Sometimes it’s not about making everything perfect – it’s about sharing a laugh, sparking imagination and learning together. ❤️

On Tuesday, we had a fantastic time at Tales in the Park, an exciting activity day organised by the National Literacy Trust. 📖✨

There was so much to explore, with the whole day centred around stories, imagination and adventure!

The children had the opportunity to get stuck into lots of wonderful sensory experiences, including:
🏖️ Exploring sand
☁️ Playing with foam
🥣 Investigating cornflakes
💦 Splashing and exploring in water
🐾 Making their very own Gruffalo masks
🦈 Creating telescopes and heading off on a hunt for sharks
🤸‍♀️ Challenging themselves to walk along a wire
🪓 And even having a go at throwing axes at a target!

There was something to capture everyone’s imagination, and it was lovely to see the children becoming completely immersed in the different activities.

Days like this are such a wonderful way to bring stories to life while supporting children’s language, imagination, sensory development, physical skills, confidence and problem-solving — all through play and adventure. ❤️

A huge thank you to the National Literacy Trust for putting on such a fantastic day! 📚🌳🦈

📚 Thankfully, gone are the days when you have to be silent in the library! 😊

We had a wonderful visit to our local library today, and there was so much to explore. The children loved scanning their books in and out using the self-service machine, carefully choosing stories to take home, and taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge.

There was lots of excitement as we searched high and low for the Hungry Caterpillar’s food hidden around the library, before spending some time enjoying the fantastic selection of high-quality puzzles and toys while I had the chance to choose a few new books for our setting too.

Regular visits to the library help foster a love of books and reading from an early age, while also developing independence, communication, decision-making and an understanding of how the community works. We can’t wait to snuggle up and enjoy all of our new stories together! 📖❤️
