Hey everyone! đź‘‹

As you know, this page is all about recognising and letting go of any secondary gain we may have in different areas of our life - the ways we unconsciously benefit from staying stuck, even when we think we want to change.

My goal is to shine a light on this concept and drive awareness, so that if you find this helpful you can take steps toward growth and positive change.

I’ve already posted extensively about what secondary gain is and how it works. Today’s post is about simple examples of how it might show up. Consider these as starting points for reflection and self-awareness, nothing else. 💡

Let’s chat in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts! 💬

Here are 5 Signs You're Stuck in Secondary Gain, In any area of your life, and How to Break Free

1. You Resist a Clear Path Forward 🛑
You entertain multiple solutions but never commit to one.
Break Free: Choose one approach and stick with it for a set time.

2. You Get More Comfort From the Problem Than the Solution 🎭
Talking about the issue feels productive, but real change doesn’t happen.
Break Free: Shift your focus from talking to doing.

3. You Keep Changing Directions 🔄
You try different solutions but abandon them before they work.
Break Free: Set a clear goal and follow through before switching strategies.

4. You Fear Who You’d Be Without This Problem 🤯
Your struggle has become part of your identity.
Break Free: Redefine success and visualize your life without the problem.

5. You Take Small Steps Without Full Commitment ⏳
You put in effort but never go all in.
Break Free: Make a firm decision and take consistent action, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Which one describes your situation?
I have a little bit of all of these!!! Ouch!

Desislava Stefanova's personal story - from anxiety to peace:

Three months ago I didn't even realise how chronically anxious I had been all my life. I was aware that I would react to certain events, situations or peope by having worries, fears or by just being nervous but I thought it was just me being "sensitive". In those sticky instances I was very grateful for the tools I have to assit me in navigating life (PSYCH-K® is top on the list).

It turned out, I had maintained a level of anxiety since childhood and I was absolutely unaware of it. It had become so chronic I thought that this was my normal way of being. At one point I noticed I was using the words "anxious" / "my anxiety" a lot, and I was hearing the words from everywhere too. With Christmas approaching I was feeling a lot more anxious than normal - money, bills, presents, food, cooking, people getting along with each other.

So I eventually forced myself to sit down with a journal and have a proper full PSYCH-K® session with myself. I was the partner and I was the facilitator. I journaled throughout and balanced goal statements; did an Alternative Life Balance and I "saw" the pattren of anxiety forming (this was a huge aha moment) and then leave; I did TPS (Transformation of the Perception of Stress), got a number of messages from people, events, sitiations... It was a very thorough deep exploration - something I hadn't done with myself for a long time.

The result - I feel like a new person! I can't even begin to tell you how much love, peace and patience filled up the space that anxiety once occupied. The most prominent change is how much more patience I have with myself now that the inner critic has finally got a lot quieter.

Everything happens at the right time and so I am grateful the time came for the chronic anxiety to leave my system and environment. Is there anything that is calling you to heal for good? It is the right time to do it now.

🎭 The Hidden Power of Secondary Gain: Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Sometimes, we think we want success, but deep down, we’re benefiting from staying stuck. This is called "Secondary Gain"—the hidden advantage we get from a situation we consciously want to change.

🔍 Primary Gain vs. Secondary Gain 🔍
Let's use an example from Carol Dweck's work and her many years of research. In her book Mindset, Carol Dweck talks about medical students as a prime example of people with a Fixed Mindset. This links very well with our topic of Secondary Gain.

âś… Primary Gain = The direct reward of an action (the main reason people something).
➡️ Example: Studying hard and passing an exam which builds confidence. The student experiences growth.

❌ Secondary Gain = The hidden excuse that protects people from discomfort (people are not always aware of it).
➡️ Example: A student parties all night before an exam, then obviously fails at it—but they now have the excuse, they failed not because they "aren’t smart," but because they were “too tired.” This shields their ego from self-doubt.

đź’ Why does this happen?
👉 Avoiding responsibility feels safer than risking failure.
👉 Staying stuck means we don’t have to step outside our comfort zone.
👉 We get sympathy, excuses, or even an identity from our struggles.

📌 Carol Dweck refers to this excuse-driven behavior as a Fixed mindset—where people protect their self-image instead of embracing challenges (Growth mindset). Recognising this connection can help break the cycle!

🚨 Recognising that we may be having Secondary Gain is the first step to breaking free! 🚨

✔️ Ask yourself: What am I really gaining from this struggle?
✔️ Challenge your hidden fears about success.
✔️ Choose action over avoidance—growth comes from facing discomfort!

👉 Are you unknowingly benefiting from staying stuck? Let’s talk in the comments! 💬

Sometimes, the comfort of staying the same outweighs the fear of change. It’s easier to stay in familiar territory, where the risks are known and the path feels safe. But what if the very things we cling to—our routines, habits, and comfort zones—are the invisible chains holding us back?

Growth begins when we dare to ask: What am I really afraid of? What am I protecting myself from? Often, the hidden benefits of staying the same—security, predictability, or even avoiding failure—keep us stuck. But when we uncover these hidden truths, we create space for transformation.

Change isn’t about abandoning who we are; it’s about evolving into who we’re meant to be. It’s about trading the comfort of today for the possibility of a brighter tomorrow. So, take that first step. Uncover what’s holding you back. Growth is waiting on the other side of your fear. 🌱

Have you ever avoided change because it felt 'safer' to stay the same? I’d love to hear your experiences!
