"I think, therefore I am." 💭

In assembly this week, we were challenged to reflect on Descartes’ famous phrase in the era of Artificial Intelligence.

AI can generate answers, but it can’t replace independent thought. As technology evolves, holding onto our capacity to question, reason, and think critically is what keeps us fundamentally human.

"The Victorian opera singer who trained some of the 20th century’s greatest voices." 🎭✨

For Week 2 of Black History Month UK, we are turning our spotlight to the vocal pioneers who broke barriers on the opera stage and shaped the world of vocal pedagogy.

Slide through to discover the extraordinary legacies of sisters Amanda and Luranah Aldridge:

✨ Amanda Ira Aldridge (1866–1956) – A brilliant opera singer who trained at the Royal College of Music under Jenny Lind. After an illness altered her vocal career, she composed under the pseudonym Montague Ring and became a legendary London vocal coach, mentoring icons like Paul Robeson and Marian Anderson.

✨ Luranah Aldridge (1860–1932) – A celebrated contralto whose remarkable vocal range earned her performances across Europe, including accolades from Charles Gounod.

Despite facing systemic barriers in Victorian and Edwardian Britain, both women carved out remarkable careers that paved the way for generations of vocalists to follow.

Midweek Spotlight: Summer Success for Regina! 🌟

Year 8 student Regina (harp & piano) had an extraordinary summer performing on both of her first-study instruments on major international stages!

🇨🇦 1 August: Regina took to the stage in Toronto for the Focus on Youth concert at One Harp World, performing music by Bernard Andrès and connecting with world-renowned harpists.

🇬🇧 30 August: She returned to the keyboard for a solo recital at the EPTA UK Conference at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, presenting a powerhouse programme of Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Prokofiev.

"It was a particularly special experience to have had wonderful opportunities to perform on both of my first-study instruments." — Regina

Huge congratulations to Regina and her teachers, Karen Vaughan (harp) and Tessa Nicholson (piano)! 👏✨
