🥦 Eating Habits and Neurodivergent Children

If you are a parent of a neurodivergent child you may have noticed mealtimes look very different compared to families with neurotypical children.

Many autistic or ADHD children find certain textures, smells or tastes overwhelming. This is because their brains process sensory information differently. What feels like a simple crunch of broccoli to one child can feel like nails on a chalkboard to another.

Neuroscience shows that the part of the brain that handles sensory input works in a unique way for neurodivergent children. That means food is not just about taste, it is about how the brain reacts to everything from smell to sight to texture.

This is why mealtimes can be stressful and why it is not as simple as saying just try it. Pressure often makes things harder. Gentle exposure, patience and creating a calm eating environment can make a huge difference.

At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse we believe in supporting families with practical strategies but also with understanding. Because when parents know the why behind behaviours they can respond with empathy instead of frustration.

💭 Parents and Mental Health Through the Diagnosis Journey

When a child is struggling the journey to a diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Before the diagnosis there are often endless questions, worries and feelings of guilt. Am I doing enough, am I missing something, is it my fault.

During the diagnosis process there can be long waits, confusing forms, appointments and assessments that leave parents feeling drained and unheard.

After the diagnosis there is often a mix of emotions. Relief to have answers. Fear about what comes next. Exhaustion from fighting for the right support. And sometimes loneliness because others do not truly understand.

Your mental health matters just as much as your child’s. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself is not selfish, it is necessary.

At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse we are here to support families through the emotional side of this journey as well as the practical side. You do not have to face it alone.

💭 Living with Dyslexia

Dyslexia is not just about struggling with words on a page. For me it was the constant anxiety of always feeling behind.

I was told I would never achieve a high grade but I earned an A* in English Literature. I failed RE but that did not define me. I started university at 24, barely scraped through my first two years and then finally found a way of writing that worked for me. By my final year I achieved a 2:1 with all my essays marked at 68 or above.

Yes sometimes I still feel behind. But I am here. I am trying. And that is enough.

This is why I created Lucy’s Little Lighthouse. You can find a tutor to help your child academically but will that really help them emotionally. I know first hand that children need both. A safe space where they feel supported, understood and celebrated is just as important as academic progress.

🌟 At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse we shine a light on the whole child, not just their grades.

💭 Let’s Talk About School 💭

So many of us carry memories from school, some good and some not so good.

What did you hate about school?
What did you find most difficult?
What do you wish had been different for you or for your child?

Every answer matters because it helps us see how education can change for the better. Your story could be the spark that helps another parent feel less alone.

🌟 Rethinking Education 🌟

The mainstream education system was built with one type of learner in mind.
But the truth is not all children learn in the same way.

For many neurodivergent children including those with autism ADHD and dyslexia the system can feel like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

📚 Sitting still for long periods
✏️ Learning in one rigid style
🎓 Measuring success by test scores alone

These expectations don’t always celebrate creativity curiosity or the unique strengths that neurodivergent children bring to the classroom.

It is not the children who need to change it is the system.

Every child deserves an education that recognises their individuality and helps them shine. 💡

💭 What do you think? How could schools adapt to support all learners better?

✨ The Stigma Around Autism ✨

You may have seen articles that say too many children are being diagnosed with autism. These headlines can feel upsetting and even make parents question themselves. But here is the truth.

🌈 Autism is not an over-diagnosis. It is not a trend. It is a recognition of the unique way your child experiences the world. Every diagnosis opens a door to support, understanding and a chance for your child to shine.

When we question whether there are too many diagnoses, we are really questioning whether children deserve to be seen and supported. At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse I believe every child deserves to be understood and celebrated for who they are.

💡 Autism is not something to fear or hide from. It is part of the beautiful diversity of the human mind.

❤️ To the parents who feel weighed down by stigma: your child is not a label and you are not failing. You are guiding a child who is wonderfully themselves. That is something to be proud of.

Let’s keep spreading acceptance, not doubt. Let’s choose celebration over stigma.

✨ From Labels to Understanding ✨

So often before a diagnosis children are given negative labels. These words can feel heavy and unfair. But when we look deeper through the lens of autism, we see the truth.

❌ Lazy = ✅ Experiencing autistic burnout
❌ Distracted = ✅ Overwhelmed by their surroundings
❌ Rude = ✅ Finding communication and social rules difficult
❌ Obsessive = ✅ Deeply passionate about a special interest
❌ Difficult = ✅ Needing consistency and safety in routines

🌈 A diagnosis does not create these traits. It explains them. It turns judgement into understanding and blame into compassion.

💡 At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse I believe no child should carry the weight of negative labels. Every child deserves to be seen for who they are and supported in ways that help them shine.

❤️ To every parent reading this: your child is not broken, they are simply waiting to be understood.

✨ What paperwork do you need for an EHCP ✨

When applying for an EHCP it can feel like you need hundreds of forms. The truth is you only need a few key pieces of information to get started.

💡 Helpful paperwork includes
✔️ Reports from your child’s school or nursery about their needs and progress
✔️ Any medical or therapy reports such as speech and language, occupational therapy or CAMHS
✔️ Your own observations as a parent about what daily life looks like for your child
✔️ Examples of how your child’s needs affect their learning and wellbeing

🌈 Remember your voice as a parent is just as important as professional reports. You know your child best.

At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse I can help you make sense of what is needed and show you how to present it in a clear, parent friendly way.

✨ What is an EHCP ✨

If you are a parent you may have heard the word EHCP but not really known what it means. EHCP stands for Education, Health and Care Plan. It is a legal document that sets out the extra support a child with special educational needs or disabilities should receive at school and sometimes beyond.

I know that can still sound confusing. At Lucy’s Little Lighthouse I like to decode the jargon and explain things in a much simpler way so parents feel confident and informed.

🌈 Together we can look at
✔️ What an EHCP really means for your child day to day
✔️ How to adapt routines at home to give extra support
✔️ Practical ways to help your child thrive both in and out of school

💡 Every child deserves the right support and every parent deserves to understand the process without feeling overwhelmed
