Strategies often tell people what to do, but not how to do it.

For example:

* use accessibility features
* chunk text to support focus
* reduce overwhelm when reading

This guide shows one practical way to do all three using Microsoft Read Aloud.

I think this needs to be echoed by as many voices as possible right now.

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) affirmed today that dyslexia, a reading disability, is entirely unrelated to a person's intelligence or cognitive potential. Dyslexic individuals possess the capacity to think, lead, and achieve at the highest levels, and countless have gone on to accomplish extraordinary achievements across every field.

IDA stands firmly in support of dyslexic learners by advancing evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the science of reading, while also championing the unique strengths, resilience, and potential that define this community.

Are these patterns you recognise in study?

Many neurodivergent women reach adulthood having built an entire toolkit of strategies to get through education and work without anyone recognising the learning difference underneath.

In education and employment, capability is visible. The effort behind it often remains unseen. Many women rely on strategies such as rewriting notes, memorising information, extensive preparation, and closely monitoring communication.

These approaches support progress for years. They also require significant effort.

Changes in environment often make that effort more visible. Transitions such as sixth form, university, professional training, or early career roles increase demands on organisation, processing, and working memory.

For many women, recognition arrives at this point. Earlier experiences in education and employment begin to make sense through a different lens.

Professionals working across education and employment hold an important role in recognising these patterns and understanding the level of effort that can sit behind apparent competence.

International Women’s Day offers a moment to recognise experiences that often remain unseen.

Earlier recognition has the potential to change educational and workplace experiences.

Following on from my previous post, this infographic shows how executive function operates in the workplace.

It is about work design rather than individual capability.

Small structural changes reduce cognitive load and improve performance.

Ever tried cooking the perfect pancake while juggling five other things in your head? 🥞
That’s executive function in action.

I’ve always loved pancakes both savoury and sweet, from classic lemon and sugar to cheese, and mushrooms. I’ve included a Jamie Oliver pancake recipe in this post, so you are all set for the big day.

Beyond breakfast, pancakes are a simple lens for understanding how strategies can shape success.

Cooking, and watching someone like Jamie Oliver navigate it, is interesting when viewed from this perspective. Research has indicated a link between executive function and dyslexia though I realise it’s not a diagnostic criterion.

Jamie is brilliant at what he is brilliant at, but executive function challenges are still there alongside the strategies he uses to support him. Even cooking something simple reveals patterns in thinking and planning.

Cooking is a great way to develop and find strategies to support executive function:
• Recipes = external memory
• Order = less mental load
• Sensory feedback = supports timing and adjustment
• Repetition = builds automatic habits

Jamie Oliver uses:
• Visible steps, not steps held in his head
• Fewer choices at the point of action
• Tools and layouts that cue the next move
• Rhythm and routine instead of constant vigilance

In the workplace, these translate to:
• Visible steps → clear checklists or project plans
• Fewer choices → templates, standard procedures, or defined workflows
• Tools and layouts → colour-coded folders, labelled inboxes, or workflow boards (e.g., Trello) that cue the next action
• Rhythm and routine → daily check-ins, standing agenda items, or recurring task reminders that automate timing and reduce constant planning

Each of these reduces the load on executive function, letting people focus on using their skills rather than juggling organisation, memory, and timing at the same time.

Strong individually tailored strategies, provide a foundation and structure to allow ability to shine through.

Strategies travel. From kitchens to classrooms to careers.

C.A.T. Neurodiversity is now in soft launch.
