Would you believe that this performance video has been taken just six weeks after starting piano lessons?

My beginner student Reuben has just played his first performance exercise - ‘Do Re Mi’ from The Sound of Music.

In only six weeks, he's mastered some core note names, key note values, and piano geography (finding different keys around the keyboard).
In our most recent lesson, we took on something new, playing in time with another person.

Duets are fantastic for all students to be doing in their lessons - they build listening, timing and performance skills. All of which are crucial to be a well-rounded musician!

I want to also highlight how fantastic Reuben has been with his practice commitment. Practice can’t be overstated!

Such a fab start to lessons! Well done Reuben!

I’m very proud of one of my beginner students, Lily! She started as a complete beginner late-2025 and has now completed her primer level.

Primer builds on key musical foundations - counting, reading the staff, piano geography and essential terminology.

Lily’s big finale of the primer level was applying all of the above to her first performance piece, ‘The Bugle Boys’, where she performed confidently and musically!

It's so important to celebrate beginner wins, and this one is a big one. Well done Lily, and onto Level 1! ⭐️

I hope everyone is enjoying their summers! I’m enjoying my slower season spending time with friends and family before the craziness of recital season kicks off in September! ☀️

Anaya is performing ‘Your Song’ by Elton John - we have been working on her stamina for longer pieces, while keeping musical detailing intact, all alongside her classical grading. It’s so important to me my students play a wide range of music!

My new ABRSM 2027–2028 syllabus arrived in the post today, and as a huge Barbie movie and Billie Eilish fan, I couldn’t wait to sit down and play What Was I Made For? from the new Grade 1 piano syllabus.

Grade 1 students have some truly beautiful music to look forward to in this new syllabus, and this piece is a wonderful example of that. I’m very much looking forward to begin teaching it!

As I’ve been flicking through the other grades, quite a few pieces from the other grades have caught my eye too, and I can’t wait to start exploring and playing those in the coming weeks!

My student Linsia has been working really hard on her supplementary repertoire following her most recent ABRSM exam, using these pieces to further develop her technique.

We have been placing a particular focus on the sustain pedal control - and it’s coming together excellently!
