📣 BACK TO SCHOOL… but, it’s not easy for all young people 🎒💚
As a new school year begins, social media will be filled with photographs of new uniforms, smiling faces and children heading through the school gates.
But for some children and young people, this week can feel very different.
For those experiencing anxiety, school-based overwhelm, emotional dysregulation or difficulties within mainstream education, the start of a new term can be extremely challenging:
⛔️ A new classroom
⛔️ A change of teachers
⛔️ A new timetable
⛔️ Busy corridors
⛔️ Noise
⛔️ New rules or ‘expectations’
⛔️ Managing Friendships
⛔️ Academic pressures
⛔️ Or simply getting through the school gates.
It is important to remember that things that may seem small to others can feel enormous to a young person who is already struggling.
At The Sunnywood Project, we believe that behaviour is communication and that, sometimes, a young person needs something different before they can begin to reconnect with learning.
Through our SPACE intervention programme, we use supportive relationships, the outdoors and carefully planned experiences to create opportunities for young people to feel safe, build confidence, regulate their emotions and have the conversations that really matter. 🌿❤️
The goal isn’t to simply get a child back into a classroom.
It’s to understand what is making the classroom feel so difficult in the first place: and help them develop the confidence, resilience and strategies they need to move forward.
For some, simply putting on their uniform is an achievement.
For others, making it through the school gates is huge.
And for some, they may not have managed it at all.
Every journey is different. 💚
