📣 BACK TO SCHOOL… but, it’s not easy for all young people 🎒💚

As a new school year begins, social media will be filled with photographs of new uniforms, smiling faces and children heading through the school gates.

But for some children and young people, this week can feel very different.

For those experiencing anxiety, school-based overwhelm, emotional dysregulation or difficulties within mainstream education, the start of a new term can be extremely challenging:

⛔️ A new classroom
⛔️ A change of teachers
⛔️ A new timetable
⛔️ Busy corridors
⛔️ Noise
⛔️ New rules or ‘expectations’
⛔️ Managing Friendships
⛔️ Academic pressures
⛔️ Or simply getting through the school gates.

It is important to remember that things that may seem small to others can feel enormous to a young person who is already struggling.

At The Sunnywood Project, we believe that behaviour is communication and that, sometimes, a young person needs something different before they can begin to reconnect with learning.

Through our SPACE intervention programme, we use supportive relationships, the outdoors and carefully planned experiences to create opportunities for young people to feel safe, build confidence, regulate their emotions and have the conversations that really matter. 🌿❤️

The goal isn’t to simply get a child back into a classroom.

It’s to understand what is making the classroom feel so difficult in the first place: and help them develop the confidence, resilience and strategies they need to move forward.

For some, simply putting on their uniform is an achievement.

For others, making it through the school gates is huge.

And for some, they may not have managed it at all.

Every journey is different. 💚

From scrambling across rocks and feeling the cool water beneath our feet to simply sitting quietly and listening to the gentle flow of the river, these seemingly small moments all serve a purpose: and today’s 1-1 sessions demonstrated that perfectly. 💚💦

For many young people who experience anxiety, overwhelm or emotional dysregulation, being close to flowing water can have a remarkable calming effect. The rhythmic sounds of the river help reduce stress, while the cool water, natural surroundings and gentle movement engage the senses in a way that helps regulate the nervous system.

As their nervous systems begin to settle, minds become clearer, emotions regulate and important conversations start to flow naturally.

At The Sunnywood Project, we don’t just use the outdoors as a backdrop: we use it intentionally to create an environment where young people feel safe enough to pause, think, reflect and grow.

Sometimes, the most meaningful progress begins with nothing more than a quiet moment beside a flowing river. 🌿

📣 Weeks 5 & 6 - SPACE 🚀

Our latest SPACE programme came to a close today 😢.
Over the last two weeks, our young people embraced two unforgettable outdoor adventures across Holcombe Moor and Scout Moor.

From climbing rocky outcrops and exploring open moorland to discovering hidden trails, taking in breathtaking views, and dipping in brooks 💦 - with every step of these adventures creating opportunities for important conversation, reflection and personal growth.

As always, it’s never just about where we go: it’s about the relationships built, the trust developed and the meaningful conversations that happen naturally along the way.

Over six weeks, we’ve watched these young people grow in confidence, resilience and self-belief, and we honestly could not be prouder of everything they’ve achieved in that time… with one young person writing in the feedback:

“the teachers have made me feel comfortable and confident during these 6 weeks… thank you all for making my experience at Sunnywood the best possible way for me to understand the world more” 🥹

Today’s 1:1 Sunnywood Pathways session was all about learning through movement, challenge and play. From climbing, throwing and balancing to hanging upside down, lifting huge boulders and even a spot of Himalayan balsam bashing!

Activities like these develop far more than physical strength. They help young people build confidence, improve coordination and gross motor skills, strengthen problem-solving abilities, regulate emotions and experience success in an environment where they can simply be themselves.

Every log climbed, every obstacle overcome and every challenge embraced is another step towards greater resilience, self-belief and wellbeing.

Sometimes the best classroom has no walls. 🌿

📣 Every behaviour is communication!

Intervention is always better than isolation.

When a young person is struggling, removing them from learning through isolation may manage the immediate situation, but it rarely addresses the reason behind it. If we want lasting change, we need to understand why the behaviour happened in the first place.

At The Sunnywood Project, we’ve seen time and again that when young people are given the right support, trusted relationships and opportunities to regulate their emotions in the outdoors, they begin to re-engage with learning, rebuild confidence and make positive choices.

Instead of asking “How do we sanction this behaviour?”, perhaps we should be asking “What has happened to this young person, and what support do they need?”

The greatest impact comes from early, compassionate intervention that helps young people develop emotional regulation, resilience and a sense of belonging: before behaviour reaches crisis point.

Today’s heat gave us the perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves by cooling off in nature.

For many of the young people on our SPACE programme, standing beneath a waterfall or wading into cold water isn’t something they would have chosen a few weeks ago.

By encouraging young people to take safe, supported risks, we help them build confidence, resilience, and self-belief.
The smiles, laughter, and sense of achievement on days like today remind us that some of the most powerful learning happens when we step out of our comfort zones to experience something new.

𝙎𝙋𝘼𝘾𝙀 is a 6-week programme for primary or secondary aged pupils designed to offer young people an opportunity to:

✅ meet new and be accepted by other young people
✅ work alongside child-centred adults who will investigate and explore their emotional wellbeing
✅ experience a calming learning environment and the benefits that come with being outdoors
✅ collaboratively complete enriching tasks to learn and develop new skills.

Activities such as this are a key part of our SPACE Programme.

They provide young people with opportunities to communicate, problem-solve, trust one another and work towards a shared goal in a safe and supportive environment.

Challenges like this in the outdoors engages young people to think creatively, listen carefully and recognise the strengths that each person brings.

For many of the young people we support, success isn’t measured by completing the task perfectly: it’s about learning to collaborate, persevere through challenges and experience the feeling of belonging to a team.
