Have you ever spotted this unusual-looking fungus whilst exploring the woods?

Meet Jelly Ear Fungus – named after its rather strange resemblance to a human ear or perhaps a giant’s ear!

Here are a few interesting facts about this fascinating fungus:

🌳 It’s commonly found growing on dead or dying branches, particularly elder trees.

🍄 Its rubbery, jelly-like texture and wrinkled appearance make it look surprisingly like a real ear!

🌧️ It thrives in damp, shady woodland and can be spotted all year round.

❄️ Amazingly, it can freeze solid in winter, thaw out and carry on growing!

👂 It’s also known as ‘wood ear’ and is commonly used in Chinese cooking.

Next time you’re out exploring the woods, take a closer look at the trees. We see plenty growing especially on our Summerseat site!

Join the team | Trainee Woodland Play Facilitator

Do you love being outdoors, working with children and creating opportunities for them to learn, explore and grow?

We’re looking for a Trainee Woodland Play Facilitator to join the team.

This is a hands-on role where no two days are quite the same. You’ll be supporting Forest School and outdoor education sessions, working alongside children and young people aged 5-18 and helping to create safe, engaging and inspiring outdoor learning environments.

You’ll be part of a small, supportive team and have opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge in Forest School, nature-based practice and therapeutic outdoor education.

The role includes:
• Supporting Forest School and outdoor education sessions
• Working with children and young people, including those with SEND
• Helping to create and set up engaging outdoor learning environments
• Supporting children’s wellbeing, confidence and emotional development
• Working as part of a team across a range of outdoor settings
• Taking part in training and your own professional development

📍 Locations: Schools across Greater Manchester and Lancashire, plus CommuniTree sites including Dunham Massey, Heaton Park, Summerseat and Tottington.

Sadly, today marks Natasha’s last day at CommuniTree 🌳

Yesterday, we got together as a team to celebrate her time with us and, of course, to wish her well on her next adventure as she heads off to…Australia!

And because cake is pretty much compulsory at CommuniTree (whatever the occasion) we couldn’t let her leave without one. Slattery created this special cake for us, complete with a kangaroo! 🦘

Thank you, Natasha, for everything you’ve brought to CommuniTree over the last year. We’ve loved having you as part of the team and we’re going to miss you so much!

Wishing you lots of love and luck for your new adventure Down Under!
