Why does Banquo's ghost appear to Macbeth? 👻

That's the question we started with in yesterday's Macbeth session.

We worked through the scene looking at how Shakespeare uses symbolism, irony, juxtaposition and duplicity to explore guilt. Particularly the contrast between Macbeth's outward appearance and his increasingly troubled inner world.

The ghost isn't simply there to scare Macbeth. It can be read as a physical manifestation of the guilt he can't escape.

One scene. One big question. LOTS to unpick!

And yes, that is my very battered copy of Macbeth: well-loved and well-used after years of teaching it! 😂

A lovely first session with a new resit pupil today ❤️

We went from “I'm no good at English” to a Grade 4 answer in 20 minutes! And, most importantly, he could genuinely see how he'd got there.

He left telling me he actually enjoyed English today - which is quite simply the absolute best part of my job ✨

Sometimes it's not about teaching someone loads of new content. It's about finding the bit that's been holding them back, breaking it down and showing them that they can do it.

Especially with resit students, rebuilding that confidence can be just as important as building the exam skills.

Kicking off the new school year with Poppies by Jane Weir 🌺

I had such an interesting conversation with a pupil this morning about the difficulty many students have in recognising and understanding emotions that, as teenagers, they simply haven't experienced. It's a hard ask!

This morning, we tried switching the experience around and looking at the situation from the son's point of view instead.

How might he have felt about leaving his mother?

Sometimes, approaching an unfamiliar experience from a different perspective can make it feel a little more relatable - and open up a much deeper conversation about the poem.

📚 Of Mice and Men is back on my desk this week...

It's not one of the most commonly taught GCSE texts anymore, but it's still brilliant for exploring friendship, loneliness, dreams, prejudice and responsibility.

Steinbeck knows how to pack a lot into 100 pages!

Rediscovering this GCSE classic has definitely been a refreshing change after marking over 300 Macbeth essays on guilt 😵‍💫

What sets a Grade 8/9 essay apart? It's not as simple as memorising more quotes.

I've been helping students build conceptual arguments for Macbeth by connecting themes instead of thinking of them as separate:

👑 Ambition corrupts kingship
⚔️ The supernatural fuels violence
💪 Guilt grows from the abuse of power

When students think about cause and effect between themes, their essays become much more thoughtful and convincing.

A little availability / end of year update from me! 😊

I've had lots of enquiries recently for after-school Year 10/11 tuition, which is lovely - thank you!

Unfortunately, my regular after-school slots are currently full, so I now have a waitlist for any new enquiries. If you'd like to join it, just drop me a message.

I hate not being able to help everyone who gets in touch, which is one of the reasons I started running my half-term GCSE booster sessions this year. They were so popular that I'm hoping to run them again from October, and I'll be contacting everyone on my waitlist once dates are released.

I do still have some daytime availability on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Daytime spaces are currently available for:
