I've recently written a new blog about the government's SEND reforms coming into schools this year — but here's the observation that actually prompted it. One thing I've noticed over many years is that additional needs don't always look like what people expect.

It isn't always a child who struggles to sit still, or one who can't read the board. Sometimes it's a bright child who understands everything out loud but freezes the moment they have to write it down. Sometimes it's a child who's brilliant at maths but can't seem to start an essay without a meltdown first. Sometimes it's simply a child who's exhausted by the end of every single day, for reasons that aren't always obvious.

None of these children necessarily have a diagnosis. Many never will. But the way they learn best often needs a bit of adjusting — a slower pace, smaller steps, more time to think before answering, or just someone who notices when they've quietly checked out.

This is exactly the kind of thing the government's new SEND reforms are trying to address this year, with more support meant to sit inside ordinary teaching rather than somewhere separate. It's a step in the right direction, though change like that always takes time to reach every classroom.

In the meantime, if you've ever thought "I can't quite put my finger on it, but something's not clicking," trust that instinct. You don't need a diagnosis in hand to mention it to someone.

I've written more about what this year's SEND reforms actually mean for parents — link in the comments if you'd like to read it.

A quick one for our Suffolk Home Education families —

Our Home Education Hub sessions starts on 7th September, and this year we've expanded the curriculum: alongside Mathematics and English, we're now also covering Science.

The Hub runs three 3hr sessions per week for KS3 and KS4 students, in a calm, small-group setting with curriculum-linked teaching and targeted one-to-one support where it's needed. It's not a school, and it's not designed to replace your own approach — it's there to add structure, subject expertise and some social learning alongside it.

If you're weighing up whether it would suit your child, or simply want to know more about how Science now fits in, I'd love to talk it through.

It's the first week of the new school year for so many families.

New shoes still stiff, new bags still smelling of plastic, that particular mix of excitement and nerves on the walk in.

Some children will stride through the gates without a backward glance. Others will need a bit more encouragement, and that's completely normal too — a slow start to the year isn't a sign that anything is wrong.

Give it genuine time before deciding whether something needs attention. September nerves and a real learning gap can look very similar in week one, and very different by week four.

Here's to a calm, happy start for your family this week.

Some children learn best when they're not the only one in the room.

I've taught plenty of students who go quiet in a 1:1 session, but open up the moment there's someone else there — someone to bounce an idea off, or who shows them they're not the only one finding a topic tricky.

That's the thinking behind our in-person shared tuition. Small groups of up to three students, working with the same tutor on the same subject, but each still following their own individual goals.

Your child gets that close, personalised attention, with a bit of discussion and shared learning built in too.

It tends to suit children who enjoy being around others, learn well by talking things through, or simply don't want to feel like they're struggling with something on their own.
