South Lee Prep School, Bury St Edmunds

South Lee Prep School, Bury St Edmunds A forward-thinking independent day school for children aged 0-13 nestled in historic Bury St Edmunds The school began with 30 children and 3 members of staff.

South Lee was founded in 1961 by several parents forming a group to purchase a large, private house in Nowton Road on the edge of Bury St Edmunds. For many years, South Lee was quite unique, in that it was run by a Board of Governors, the majority of whom had to be parents of pupils currently at the school. Whilst the parent governors no longer need to be in the majority, they still make up a large percentage of the Board. Currently, the Board is made up of parent governors and governors who are parents of pupils formerly educated at South Lee. As a registered charity, we do not make a β€˜profit’ but any surplus is put towards maintaining and developing the school. Since opening, a number of building programmes were implemented and additions included classroom blocks, a Nursery, a hall/ gym, a kitchen, a science laboratory and a computer room. The original house is now the smallest part of the school. A neighbouring house (South Lodge) was purchased in 1995 to provide more classrooms for the Prep School. The grounds were redesigned in 1996 to provide better hard courts and parking areas. In 2001, South Lodge was demolished and replaced with a new Prep School building, which retained the same name. Our most recent development is the new Sports & performance Centre, which opened in 2013. Outdoor games lessons take place at the Victory Sports Grounds (opposite the school) and on the all-weather surface at nearby Nowton Park. Swimming, which is an option for Pre-Prep pupils, takes place at Bury St Edmunds leisure centre. Recently, the school purchased around 10 acres of land in Nowton village, which includes a cricket facility and an environmental area (including a pond) that can be used for Science and other activities.

South Lee at the NSEA Championships

What an achievement for our young riders!

Iris and Paul represented South Lee at the NSEA Championships at Hickstead in West Sussex, competing against hundreds of ponies and riders from schools across the UK.

Iris and her pony Princess had an incredible two days, jumping four fantastic clear rounds across four classes, including an impressive 7th place in a highly competitive 75cm class.

Paul also jumped a brilliant clear round in the 60cm class, finishing 54th out of around 120 children.

We are incredibly proud of them both and their fantastic achievements on such a big stage. A huge well done to Iris, Paul and their ponies for representing South Lee so brilliantly!

Where Confidence Grows

Children achieve their best when they feel happy, secure and valued.

At South Lee, our small class sizes and close-knit community mean every child is known as an individual. They are encouraged to ask questions, embrace new opportunities, celebrate their successes and learn from every experience.

It is this nurturing environment that gives children the confidence to flourish, not only academically, but socially and emotionally too.

Because when children believe in themselves, there's no limit to what they can achieve.

That is the South Lee Way.

Learning to Think Differently 🎩

At South Lee, we don't just teach children what to think; we teach them how to think.

Using Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats, our pupils learn to approach challenges from different perspectives, developing creativity, critical thinking, confidence and collaboration. Rather than rushing to the first answer, they learn to explore ideas, consider different viewpoints and make thoughtful decisions.

These are skills that extend far beyond the classroom and help prepare children for whatever their future holds.

Because a great education isn't just about knowledge, it's about developing curious, confident thinkers.

That is the South Lee Way.

Independent in Every Sense

As a standalone prep school, we have the freedom to do what is right for every child.

Every decision we make is centred around our pupils – from the opportunities we provide and the curriculum we deliver, to the individual pathways we help our children take beyond Year 8.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we take the time to understand every child, nurture their strengths and help them discover their passions.

It is a personalised education built on strong relationships, high expectations and a genuine sense of belonging.

That is the South Lee Way.

πŸ‘‰ Come and experience it for yourself. Book a personal tour via the link in our bio.
