What most yoga studios teach today is not yoga in the classical sense. Itโ€™s a derivative, a fragment, and often a rebranding.

Letโ€™s name it cleanly.

What yoga actually is (classically)
If we go back to the primary sources โ€” not Instagram, not studios, not teacher trainings โ€” yoga is defined as a system of liberation, not a movement class.

In Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, yoga is defined in one line:
Yogaแธฅ citta-vแน›tti-nirodhaแธฅ
Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.

No mention of:
- handstands
- playlists
- flexibility
- core work
- aesthetics

Asana is one limb out of eight, and originally meant a seat โ€” something stable enough to sit and practice meditation.

What most studios teach today:
- postural yoga
- fitness-based movement
- nervous-system-soothing-without-context
- sometimes trauma-informed, sometimes not
often commodified
- almost always de-spiritualised

This form largely comes from:
19thโ€“20th century physical culture
colonial influence
- gymnastics + calisthenics
later blended with bits of Hatha yoga

Texts like Hatha Yoga Pradipika do describe postures, but always as preparatory tools, not the goal.

Asana was meant to:
- purify the body
- stabilise energy
- make the body forgettable so consciousness could turn inward

Not to:
- perform
- optimise
- brand
- โ€œachieveโ€ poses

Dear all,

Due to low attendance over recent weeks, Iโ€™ve decided to suspend yoga classes for February.

This pause will give me time to reflect, reset, and rethink the structure of the classes so they can work better for everyone โ€” including myself.

Yoga is something I truly love sharing, and this is not a goodbye, just a temporary pause. Iโ€™m very grateful to everyone who has been attending and supporting the classes, and I hope you can understand this decision.

Updates about future classes will be shared here in due course.

Childโ€™s Pose โ€” one of my favourites.
It can be practiced anywhere, anytime, and for as long as you need.
In this pose, you can allow yourself to let go completely โ€” to soften, to surrender, to return to your physical body.

With every breath ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ, feel the tension slowly melting away, exhale by exhale.
Come back to yourself. Let the mind quiet down.

Childโ€™s Pose is beautiful because it strips everything away โ€” you become totally open, totally vulnerableโ€ฆ gently held, cuddled by existence. ๐Ÿ’ซ
