The solo to Metallica's 'The Unforgiven' is a masterclass in how to write an emotional solo that builds to a crescendo. It's also one of the rare cases where you'll find Kirk Hammett not using a wah pedal! During the recording of The Black Album, producer Bob Rock really pushed Kirk to the limit to come up with the solo on the final recording, and it is arguably his best work.

Skid Row - 18 & Life solo. From the 1989 album 'Skid Row'.

This song had a pretty big impact on me when I was a teenager, it was the first song I ever saw someone play on the electric guitar in front of me! It's a really emotional guitar solo with some great pinch harmonics and a faster more shred based section towards the end, a masterclass in how to write and build up a solo to a climax.

Guns N' Roses, Sweet Child O' Mine solo. From the 1987 album 'Appetite For Destruction'.

This is one of my favourite solos to play and have fun with, even if its a bit different stylistically to the rest of the record. Watch out for the tricky Harmonic Minor run in the build up to the second section halfway through. Being a Slash solo, it's definitely got a looser feel with plenty of attitude so don't get too hung up on making every note sound ultra clean. Grab a wah pedal for maximum Slash!
