Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 AJ Student Prize, celebrating some of the most thoughtful and ambitious work emerging from the next generation of architects.

India Weisser of Oxford Brookes University and Oscar Loo of University College London were named joint undergraduate winners, while Jake Southcombe of De Montfort University took home the postgraduate prize. Elija Halil of the University of Kent was also highly commended in the postgraduate category.

This year’s entries explored a remarkable breadth of ideas, from intergenerational housing and changing landscapes to community infrastructure and the hidden histories of place. Across the winning projects, there was a clear focus on addressing real-world social and environmental challenges through considered, research-led design.

For manufacturers like Marley, supporting future architects goes beyond the products we make. It also means sharing the technical knowledge, practical experience and understanding of materials that can help turn ambitious ideas into buildings that work in the real world.

Did you know it takes a mere 65 seconds for one tonne of CO2 to be captured at the CCS plant in Brevik?

Last week, Heidelberg Materials welcomed Lydia Hunter, Alex Price, Dan Redfern, James Seawell and Denis Popescu from Marley on a tour of its facilities to showcase the cutting-edge hardware that is used in the UK's first roofing tile to use carbon capture technology: Marley's new Edgemere 2.0 low-carbon concrete roof tile.

There, discussions focused on the considerations around sustainability, including how the limestone mine, the cement factory, CCS equipment and the alternative fuels processing plant were all built close to each other to help minimise the environmental impact of the transport needed to keep operations going.

Thank you to all the members of Heidelberg Materials who were involved in the event and in supporting Marley to reduce the carbon impact of the products we manufacture.

Marley is delighted to join forces with South & City College Birmingham, the Department for Work and Pensions & Bauder to offer fully funded training and work experience to residents in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region.

The construction industry is facing a shortage of people with the right skills and training, whilst at the same time, younger generations are struggling to find opportunities to pave the way for a meaningful career. To help address both issues, we have focused our efforts on initiatives that help local residents to develop practical skills, as well as helping contractors navigate the ongoing industry skills shortage.

More than 80 years on, the Mulberry Harbours still have a story to tell.

BBC News has reported on the preservation of a surviving floating roadway section, which is set to be displayed at Solent Gateway in Marchwood.

For us at Marley, the story has a particular resonance. In 1944, we supplied precast concrete panels for the reinforced concrete ‘Beetle' pontoons that supported the floating roadways. Our contribution formed part of the wider effort to supply Allied forces in Normandy.

We are proud of the people whose skill and dedication made our contribution possible. Seeing this part of the wider project preserved is a welcome reminder of the engineering legacy they helped create.
