This week in Science, our focus has been on ecosystems and the delicate relationships that connect living things through food chains and food webs.
As part of our learning, students explored concepts such as interdependence, species decline, extinction, and the bioaccumulation of pollutants such as microplastics. We discussed how changes to one part of an ecosystem can affect many other species, and why protecting biodiversity matters.
To bring these ideas to life, students collected rocks, wood and plant material from the Surrey Hills woodland, which we carefully assembled into a classroom vivarium. The result is a miniature ecosystem and a celebration of the natural environment on our doorstep.
By observing real mosses, plants, wood and habitats up close, students were able to connect classroom science with the living world around them and develop a deeper appreciation of the ecosystems we all depend on.
