🎃 German Word of the Week 🇩🇪

This week’s word is der Kürbis, meaning “the pumpkin” 🎃

The plural is die Kürbisse.

A perfect German word to learn in October with Halloween just around the corner! 👻

Can you use Kürbis in a German sentence? 💬

🎃 Since it’s October, I thought this German phrase was very fitting!

In Germany, children say „Süßes oder Saures!“ when trick or treating 👻🍬

It’s the German equivalent of “Trick or treat!”

A fun little phrase to add to your German vocabulary just in time for Halloween! 🇩🇪🎃

🍂 Hallo Oktober! 🇩🇪

October has arrived, and in Germany that means Herbst is well and truly underway. Colourful foliage, cooler days, cosy evenings and plenty of Gemütlichkeit. 🍁☕️

October is also an interesting month for German culture. 🇩🇪 Tag der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day) is celebrated on 3rd October and marks German reunification in 1990.

And despite the name, Oktoberfest actually begins in September! 🍺🥨 The famous Munich festival traditionally runs from September into early October.

As the days get shorter, here’s some German autumn vocabulary to get you into the seasonal spirit. 🍂

🍂 der Herbst – autumn
🎃 der Kürbis – pumpkin
🍁 das Herbstlaub – autumn foliage
🌰 die Kastanie – chestnut
🌧️ das Herbstwetter – autumn weather
🧣 gemütlich – cosy
🇩🇪 Tag der Deutschen Einheit – German Unity Day

And one of my favourite German words for this time of year has to be gemütlich. It describes that lovely feeling of being cosy, comfortable and relaxed. 🕯️☕️

Was mögt ihr am Herbst am liebsten? 🍂
What do you love most about autumn?

🍂 German Word of the Week: die Vorfreude 🇩🇪

die Vorfreude – the excitement and happiness you feel when looking forward to something. ✨

It’s one of those lovely German words that captures a whole feeling in just one word. Whether you’re looking forward to a holiday, seeing someone special, an upcoming event or simply your plans for the weekend, that feeling of happy anticipation is Vorfreude. 🥰

Example:
Die Vorfreude auf meinen Urlaub ist riesig.
The excitement for my holiday is huge. ✈️
