đźš« Don't plan your next team day until you do this.

I know it’s tempting to book a day out, bring everyone together, do something fun and “bond”… But if you haven’t diagnosed what’s really going on, a team day won’t fix a thing.

In fact, it can make the real issues harder to spot.

Most team days are based on guesses - not grounded insight. And when you skip the groundwork, you end up energising people for a day, then slipping back into the same patterns on Monday.

Before you plan anything, ask yourself:

👉 Do I know the real root cause behind the friction or performance gaps - or am I hoping the day will magically surface it?
👉 Have I taken the time to understand the dynamics beneath the surface?
👉 Is a team day even the right intervention, or simply the most familiar one?

Here’s the truth few leaders admit out loud: Most team days are used to avoid the deeper work, not support it.

The high-performing teams I work with absolutely do away days… but only after we’ve laid the foundations that make that investment worthwhile. Otherwise you’re just sprinkling glitter on a structural problem.

If you’re considering a team day, away day, or leadership workshop, pause. Get clarity first. The right conversation upfront will save you a fortune - and a lot of disappointment.
