Promoting fine motor skills to engage boys.
Fine motor skills involve small muscles working with the brain and nervous system to control movements in areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, tongue and eyes. Developing fine motor skills helps children do things like eating, writing, manipulating objects and getting dressed.
Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination which is later linked to early literacy. Repeated and varied opportunities to explore and play with small world activities, puzzles, arts and crafts and the practise of using small tools, with feedback and support from adults, allow children to develop proficiency, control and confidence.
In setting we provide interesting experiences which help children practice fine motor skills. Cooking, gardening, fixing and making things are all good examples of activities that involve using tools and small movements with accuracy and precision. The fine manipulative control skills developed in these activities will begin to provide the foundations for holding a pencil for drawing, mark-making and writing when children are developmentally ready.

The babies enjoy a little sensory tea party.
They act out having tea with Sophie, having mint flavoured water to represent the tea, playdough cookies, and white water for milk.
The children enjoy filling and emptying, they practise their pouring and scooping skills while Sophie models language and promotes early sharing skills.
