As an professional picture framer, what did Gav make of his 4 day course with us?

I met Gav at the Art Trade Guild Art, Print & Frame Expo, where I was presenting a ‘pricing for framers’ talk & running a frame design workshop. Like many framers Gav was primarily self-taught & realised that there were some gaps in his framing knowledge. He ask if I could design a course for him that would fill those gaps & help him achieve the Guild Certified Framer qualification. After a chat to get a better understanding of Gav’s experience, I suggested a course syllabus that covered:

Conservation framing techniques for art on paper, textiles & 3-D objects.
GCF Certified Framer exam preparation.
Canvas stretching.
Business practices.
Pricing.

A couple of days after his course, Gav left us the following review:
“If you’re serious about conservation framing, whether you’re a beginner looking to build strong foundations or a professional wanting to elevate your skills, I cannot recommend Jon’s course highly enough. It was genuinely transformative for my practice. I came away not only with new skills and confidence, but also renewed enthusiasm. Already looking forward to the next visit.
Thank you, Jon. Highly recommended!”

Whether you're self-taught or not, if you feel like there are gaps in your framing knowledge, get in touch & let’s have a chat about what Picture Framing Tuition UK can do for you.

When it comes to textile framing, Cath Friend from from Emerald Frames is a wonderful mix of extremely knowledgable, practical & down to earth. I'd definately recommend her texile workshop at the Fine Art Trade Guild.

When should you buy moulding on chop?

When you can’t cut it well yourself - for example hard woods, mouldings that are too wide for your mitre guillotine or mouldings that are easily chipped or damaged when cutting.

When chop costs less - for small frames it can cost less to buy on chop than the cost of buying a length of moulding, especially when you factor in labour time for cutting moulding yourself. The same applies with frames that require just over a length.

When you struggle to join a moulding - wide, heavy mouldings can be hard to join. Order as routed chop and put the emphasis on your supplier.

When you are pushed for time - you don’t have to cut chop, so it saves you time.

If you're calculating your framing prices by multiplying the cost of materials you're only accounting for around 30% of the real cost of making a frame. The vast majority of the costs of making a frame are things that you might not have even considered such as rent, utility & telephone bills, marketing costs, accountants fees & so on.

These days many framers stetch canvases using staples rather than copper tacks. The staples used should be stainless steel or galvanised so that they don't rust. They should be inserted diagonally, not parellel to the stretcher bars. This reduces the damaged caused to the warp (vertical threads) & weft (horizontal threads) of the canvas.
